County pulls back money for new 49ers stadium

08:16 AM ET 06.24 | Out of nowhere, Santa Clara County officials have yanked $30 million in tax funds promised for the San Francisco 49ers' new Santa Clara stadium, saying they would rather spend the money on teachers than install "little televisions in the back of stadium seats." The 49ers and Santa Clara city leaders strongly and passionately object to the move, saying voters had specifically earmarked redevelopment funds to the stadium and that the county has no right to keep it. Lengthy court battles are likely, launching a rare soap opera in a stadium debate that has been mostly peaceful -- and supposedly long over.

(saying they would rather spend the money on teachers than install "little televisions in the back of stadium seats.")
Finally somebody gets it! These teams bring money into the community but the owners retail the vast majority of it. I believe it should be up to the owner to build the stadium with private funding and not taxpayer funds. Robert Kraft did it up in Foxboro and if he can do it other owners can pony up and do it as well!
I find it hard to swallow to ask the public, many of which will never have the $ to go to a game, to pay for it in taxes.

Tax payer subsidies for millionaires and billionaires.

There is another side to this coin also. Think about the Tax Breaks and incentives the Owners get on these deals, then add property tax increases for the average Joe. It doesn't end with the privilege of buying a billionaire a new toy. It's a gift that keeps on taking.

Kudos to Santa Clara county, let the billionaires pay for their own businesses and buildings and take care of the taxpayers, after all; it is their money, they should be the ones to benefit from it.

How about the little details the Taxpayer gets to pay for. After all they aren't running a stadium on a 200 amp electrical service, nor are they flushing 5000 thousand toilets into 4" drains. There is a lot of infrastructure involved and it all cost money, taxpayer money. Highways, access roads, ramps. Then maintenance on the whole operation. All for eight weekends a year. Plus a few side gigs.

New York City recently "gave" the Wilpons <Mets owners> Property acquired via the taxpayer, and worth $400-$500 million.
Gave it. To develop.
When the property was acquired it was with the intention of "selling" it to a developer. Nice job Bloomberg.

+1.
Let them play on a sandlot if they don't build a stadium with their own money.

As usual, class warfare jealousies are making most of you miss the big picture. Whether you personally agree with the decision or not, the voters of Santa Clara county voted to allocate $40 Million of redevelopment money to the project, $10 Million of which has already been spent. Now a handful of city officials have taken that money in contravention of voter wishes and there are no guarantees how they'll spend it.

Look at the big picture. If they're allowed to do this, no voter referendum will ever be safe again. What if they had allocated the money to schools? Can a handful of city officials decide that money is better spent on other pet projects? Can they use this as mechanism to end-run funding projects the voters specifically disapproved? Allowing politicians to usurp the will of the people is a very dangerous precedent.
