Rangers in market for sniper

08:22 AM ET 06.24 | Stymied thus far in his attempts to acquire the offensive force the Rangers likely need in order to take the next step following their so-near-and-yet-so-far 2011-12, Glen Sather indicated his team would dive into the free agent pool that isn't all that deep. Alexander Semin is perhaps the most skilled sniper on the market but it's difficult to imagine the Rangers engaging in the type of long-term deal the impending Capitals free agent is believed to be seeking. Otherwise, veterans Ray Whitney, Ryan Smyth, Shane Doan and perhaps Jochen Hecht might provide stop-gap improvement for the club that will be without Marian Gaborik (shoulder surgery) for the first couple of months if the season opens on time, but none is the top-six gun Sather and coach John Tortorella both covet.

I think the Army Rangers have some snipers and they might be willing to part with one cheap. Just wonder who the NY Rangers want to take out.

Schenn for JVR, you heard it first on this site!

Why, so they can teach him how to block shots and forget about going anywhere near the offensive zone...

Just want to congratulate Flyers fans on getting a kid who I genuinely believe will turn into one of the better 2nd pair shut down D men one day. The kid has heart, and despite all the ridiculous expectations people here put on him still managed to look somewhat decent on an awful team. It's a start towards rebuilding your D.

and you guys got a good player in return. Nice deal overall.

Are the rangers really missing an offensive one-way player? Is that really what was lacking? I don't see committing a big chunk of cap space for another scorer as being the missing piece.

NY sounds like a potential landing spot for the likes of Bobby Ryan.

It is a tough decision for all teams on signing free agents. If the season doesn't start on time these teams and the league both lose.
