09:24 AM ET 06.24 | Jonathan Papelbon finally blew a save. Until Saturday's game against the Rays, the Phillies' closer was a perfect 17 for 17 in save opportunities. Yet he still found a way to contribute to the 7-6 win. Papelbon may have given Jim Thome just the inspiration he needed to hit his 13th career walkoff home run. "I came into the clubhouse and I said 'whoever walks this guy off, I'll give him five grand,'" Papelbon said. "I didn't think Jim would do it right off the bat." Thome did not give any of his teammates a chance to collect on the bounty -- he was the first and last batter in the bottom half of the ninth, blasting a shot into the left field stands. Papelbon said he immediately wrote the check. Thome would not confirm if payment had been made.

The story would had a better ended if Thorne came out and said he was given the money to a local charity.

He's going to have to pay out a lot of money this year!!!

How about if Paps wrote the check out himself to Thome's favorite charity?

IF this were the NFL, a panel would be created to investigate whether this "bounty" circumvents the luxury tax threshold.

It's not even a "Bounty" and calling it that is ridiculous. Thome didn't "take" anybody out or injure anybody. Total crap writing, as usual, from lame sportswriters.

Let me clarify- it's not the same as the Saints "Bounty"...the media is going to use that term with everything now. Two different circumstances.

June 24, 2012  06:55 PM ET

Thome ought to use the money to buy managing lessons for his a--hole buddy Chollie "Just keep chewing that gum" Manuel.

But the NFL CBA is so over the top in the area of commissioner powers that Roger Goodell has jurisdiction even in this matter. Expect an 8 season suspension any minute now.
