Negotiations leaving scars for Forte

08:04 AM ET 06.25 | Bears running back Matt Forte remains hopeful that his agent and the Bears can strike a long-term deal. But, he acknowledged to [the Sun-Times] that the process has left some "scars." "That's what happens when you get into the business side of sports," he said. "There's an easy way to get over those scars, but we'll see. Everyone looks at it and says, 'Oh, it's only about money. It's not only about money.' It's about you going out there and putting your heart and soul on the field, being respected for what you do, and then being rewarded for it." The difference, of course, is how he and the team believe is a fair "reward." The deadline for coming up with a long-term deal is July 16.

Running backs need to understand their real value, not what they thing they're worth. The NFLPA signed on to the new CBA, and with it the new lower salary caps. Players just can't all expect to eat up big chunks of the cap all by themselves.
That said, the Bears shouldn't be too cheap with this guy. He can gain yards.

Forte should walk. This should have gotten done a long time ago.

maybe it's in his best interests to move on and forget a long term deal at this point.

It's a tough game when you leave it all on the field and the business aspect kinda sneaks up on you.

The Bears tagged him. It's play or sit. For $7.7 million, he should play the year, see what kind of stats he can run up, and then test the waters next year.

I thought those were echoes inside the halls of FN. No one worth a damn around to make things run properly.

His agent should just advise him to relax. His agent will pump up his play during negotiations to ask for more cash and the team will point out flaws comparing him to other RB's to keep the price low. It has nothing to do personally, just the way of doing business. Forte needs to only hear the dollars and years offered and not the other stuff if he is so mentally fragile.

As a Bears fan I just want to see Forte play again this year, along with Cutler. The year will be so much better if both of them make it through injury free. You may be right. I do think that the devaluation of RB's is starting to go to far, and I'm sure owners love this so they can be the damn cheap arses they love to be.

Unless I am wrong and Forte is actually an idiot, he is not going to pass on 7.5 million for a season coming off a knee injury. And he is not going to be a problem player during a year when he is going to have to prove himself coming off a knee injury...either for the Bears or a different team.
IMO, Forte is a very good back but he is not a top 5 back, he has glaring short yardage, goal line and TD scoring issues (which the Bears have to get another RB for every year) and he is not going to be 50% of the Bears offense this year unless Cutler and Marshall go down. And, in that happens, the Bears won't win crap and the coaching staff and roster will be blown up at the end of the year with or without Forte.
Forte is not bargaining from a position of strength. He is a year too late.

Hmmm...guy averages 70 yards a game. Not sure where this elite image comes from. The streets are full of guys who can give you 70 yards a game. Take the 7 mil, Matt...and then another 7 if they offer it.
Guy barely reaches 1000 yards a year and he ain't getting any younger. Take the money and run...literally!
