The draft's biggest enigma

08:10 AM ET 06.25 | On paper, Jared Sullinger was much the same player as a sophomore that he was as a freshman. He helped Ohio State gain a share of another Big Ten championship and go two steps further in the postseason, to the Final Four. Yet, at times, [Sullinger] just didn't look the same last season. ... Nearly three months since he ended his college career, Sullinger still is an enigma -- maybe the biggest in the NBA draft on Thursday night. It's old hat to him, his parents and his older brothers, who say Jared has made a habit of proving his detractors wrong since he was the fat kid at Monroe Middle School who had trouble keeping up with everyone else on the court. "The bottom line," said his father, Satch, "is that wherever he goes, he's going to be a hidden jewel."

Sully is what he is, a very skilled big man who's also a sub-par athlete. He's never going to be a star for anyone but I think he'll figure out how to be effective enough to be a solid big man off the bench. The back issue may help him in the long run because he'll fall to a better teamwhere expectations are reasonable rather than a lottery pick where someone expects him to really improve the team.

Sullinger could very well turn into a serviceable piece off the bench, but I don't think he's a 1st round pick. He actually reminds me of Ed O'Bannon. I think he has bust written all over him.

What is his work ethic? That is the only question that matters.

LMFAO!!! Dang... that's a blast from the past.... LOL!!! what ever happened to him and his twin bro?? anybody know??

He became 'homesick.' Never worked out at the next level. He was too small to play down low, and not quick enough to play on the perimeter. Ended up in Europe.

I will never understand how or why anyone expected anything out of Sean May in the NBA. It seemed pretty clear that his best play was done in college.

I wish we could go back to the comments during that time. I said exactly the same thing.

He's the modern day Corliss Williamson without the edge to him... plain and simple...

Good comparison...I was thinking like a Drew Gooden type but even Drew was pretty athletic when he was younger.

He could be the next Sean May. He won a ring in college but didn't go anywhere in the pros.

Sullinger didn't win a ring in college.

That's easy to say in hindsight. At the time, he had just won a championship and played really well and he was a big guy with good hands, nice touch and good post moves. He just couldn't keep the weight off.

Yup, he was serviceable when he played. But like you said he never took care of his body and thus was always injured which just made things worse and worse (a less talented Eddy Curry situation)
