Draft proves Wings make change for the bigger

08:26 AM ET 06.25 | Had Jiri Hudler been born a decade later, perhaps the Red Wings would have passed on making the 5-foot-10 forward a second-round selection. The gradual change actually began last season when the Red Wings selected several bigger bodies. Last weekend at the NHL draft, the Wings became even bigger. With the game going big, the Wings drafted bigger, bulkier prospects. All six players drafted -- even third-round goalie Jake Paterson -- are at least 6-feet tall. "The game is changing," said Jim Nill, the Wings assistant general manager in charge of the draft. ... Said general manager Ken Holland: "You don't wake up and suddenly you're bigger. It's a process. But you hope to keep adding gradually."

Legion of Doom Sequel?

The players teams draft, many will never be heard again. Size is great but speed kills. But giving Detriots history of fantastic drafts, these kids might be dominating on the ice in 4 years. Meanwhile, they have $20 mil to spend on free agents... Detriot knows how to put a winner on the ice.

I wonder if Babcock collects a royalty every time his picture is posted on T&R?

Detroit had a nice 20 year run while Lidstrom was playing. He made everyone around him better and everyone in management look smarter. We shall see how his retirement affects this team.

See the Wings going hard after Suter and Parise and probably Schultz. See that model franchise reloading and who wouldn't want to wear the winged wheel. Still my favorite sports logo.

This is his best Brian Burke impersonation.

That is one reason why I don't like the Wings. They have a great organization that makes them so consistently good. RR makes a good point about Lidstrom though. It will be interesting to see if it all comes together again for them this year.

And how did the original work out?

There's two regurgitated lines about the Wings: they're old and they're soft. With Osgood, Draper, Maltby and now Lidstrom gone (possibly Holmstrom as well), the former is going to be a little specious. Some of the time the latter is true. '08 and '09 people got fooled into thinking it was true; the last three years the strategy has been true...hit them at every turn and they'll give the puck up. Draft is one thing, but this reason is why I like FA names like Gaustad or Pahlsson. Both are big, but just as important is that they win faceoffs.

We'll see. It transitioned nicely from Yzerman to Lidstrom, let's see if it transitions nicely to Zetterberg. I think he's got the leadership and hard work ethic to make him the next captain. I think it has more to do with what they add to all these guys.

The young kids had a lot of time to learn from Lidstrom, and I can see the wings bringing him back for a role with the franchise. When you pick up Zetterburg and Datsyuk in the 6th and 7th round -- the scouts are seeing something the rest of the league is not. I don't think it will be a difficult transition.

What are you saying? Is Canuck about to become the new host of Jeopardy?
