08:29 AM ET 06.25 | Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, Los Angeles is the apple of the NHL's eye these days. [The Kings] are what the Toronto Maple Leafs hope to be -- not just Stanley Cup champions but grinding, forechecking, defensive-minded Stanley Cup champions. So says Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "I look at the way (the Kings) played and the type of team they had was very similar to what we had in 2007 (in Anaheim)," said Carlyle, who won the Cup with the Ducks that year. "It was a grinding type of puck movement (in the playoffs) ... There wasn't a lot of goals scored off the rush. There was a lot more special teams in the games." This is the kind of hockey Carlyle wants his Leafs to play.

Never thought I would read where someone wants to model their franchise after the LA Kings.

Penner was the common denominator in both those cups. You get this mountain going and the cup moves to it.

They'd better start with a goaltender.

It wouldn't hurt if the goalie was fast either since Quick is taken

Just can't ever picture a blue and white uniform standing underneath that shiny silver thingy! Would be like seeing Steve Urkel playing The Hulk.

Get talented Goalie, get talented D, get talented forwards, make sure they all play hard and smart... wait, is the cat out of the bag???

I guess that means His Irkenss is ready to give up a 1st round pick for Pancake Man. :-)

They're going to Vegas?

June 25, 2012  09:44 AM ET

I don't think Toronto will be able to follow that kind of grinding format. I can't see the players being that committed and hustling the way it necessary to make that system work. Instead they'll just keep up their grating style of play that they have shown over the last couple years.

June 25, 2012  10:01 AM ET

That is the dumbest headline ever.

June 25, 2012  10:01 AM ET

Clearly the Kings copied the Leafs' blueprint!

June 25, 2012  10:05 AM ET

Great!

Leafs just missing a player similar to Doughty/Niedermayer, Quick/Giguere, Kopitar/Getzlaf, Brown/Perry, Richards/McDonald, Stoll/Pahlsson, and a Penner.

Once they get guys that can play all their roles, then the Cup shall be ours!

It's only a pipe dream away Argos.

They do have JVR now. That's a step in the right direction.
