08:35 AM ET 06.26 | Born July 6, 1990, Justin Schultz, who hasn't yet played a game in the NHL, could soon have an early birthday present. [Schultz] became a free agent on Monday, and the Detroit Red Wings quickly launched their pursuit of the highly coveted former Wisconsin star. "We've contacted his agents to express the Detroit Red Wings are interested in signing him to a contract," general manager Ken Holland told M-Live.com. "We think there's a tremendous opportunity in Detroit." Many teams will be making a pitch for Schultz, a tremendously gifted offensive defenseman who some believe is ready to be a top-four NHL defenseman without having played a game as a pro. Many believe he will be the third-most sought after free agent. Wings dive headfirst into Schultz sweepstakes

uh...free agent...Red Wings...is there even a question here?

There may be more teams in the running to sign this kid than there are for Parise and Suter.

Those are just Wings fans.

He hasn't played a single game as a professional and they are going to throwing silly money after him. I think he has a potential to be a colossal bust.

say what you want but they have the smartest GM in the NHL....been to the playoffs more times in the last 25 years than anyone else...last team to win back to back cups...

They'll make a run at this kid....but I think they're also going to take a shot at Parise and Suter

You could be right BF...only time tells on this type of deal...

They actually can't give him anymore money than the standard entry nhl contract which I think is around 900,000. Pretty much Schultz can go wherever he wants to go, hope it's with the wings, but we shall see.
