The first four teams to sell

08:12 AM ET 06.27 | If this were a golf tournament, we'd be nearing the weekend and eyeing the cut line. [Let's] put the magic barrier as 10 games (in the loss column) out of a playoff spot. There are four such teams: Seattle in the American League and the Cubs, Colorado and San Diego in the National League. ... [Of] our four current obvious sellers, who figures to be the most active? The Cubs and San Diego. The Cubs, in their first year under Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer, have successfully sold their fan base on the idea that this will take a few years to rebuild. So Ryan Dempster, if he heals his lat muscle, figures to be gone, and Matt Garza, who is under control through next year, also could go.

telling the Cubs fans it'll be "a few years to rebuild" probably sounds like a miracle to them.
We are further into the 21st century now than when the Cubs last won the WS in the 20th century.
A few years doesn't sound so bad.

They're beyond rebuild status. They need an overhaul.

Speaking of rebuilding in Chicago...tear down Wrigley.

the Cubs have been rebuilding for years----- if the fans stop going to the games, they might force their hand to do something positive

Because of the extra wild card team this year there will be a whole less trading because more teams think they have a chance to get one of those spots.

sitting in the stands (or standing in the bleachers) at Wrigley is phenomenal - it's everything else "inside" the stadium that needs to be gutted. i've seen college football stadiums 'rehabilitated' where the old bathrooms were removed for cleaner ones, walkways were widened/upgraded, concessions improved and it's made a world of difference. aside from the character of watching the game, the stadium is a pit and could use the uplift

Cubbie fans should reflect on how well rebuilding plans have gone for the Royals and the Pirates. And it's not as if Theo has ever taken a team from the last place and made them a winner before.

I thought they were going to do something with Wrigley using bond money until the idiot owners got caught cooking up some mind numbingly stupid political attack on Obama when they needed Rahm's help. One has to wonder about the intelligence of people who have a lot of money. Intuitively one would think that a person would have to have a greater than average IQ to get that rich but maybe not. Or possibly the sense of entitlement and superiority i.e. that normal rules don't apply, that comes with being very wealthy over rides intelligence.

The Twins are in a listening mood too. Look for 1 or more players to be traded for pitching prospects. I really like Span, but think he is the most marketable/easy to replace from within, so I look to see him move. If Liriano keeps pitching like he has since returning to the lineup, I see him a likely candidate to move somewhere else too.

I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

I am not in Utah, Sully. Moab is just one of the greatest places I've ever been. I change it around every couple of months.
But Wrigley really needs to be replaced, or to get a major facelift. Went there last summer...pretty damn bad.

Some of these teams have some nice pieces to trade...
San Diego - Carlos Quentin, Huston Street, Chase Headley...
Chicago Cubs - Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Alfonso Soriano (and his contract), David DeJesus, Ian Stewart, Geovany Soto, Carlos Marmol
Seattle - Chone Figgins, Ichiro?...
Colorado - Todd Helton, Rafael Betancourt...
Not sure what some of these teams think they have to trade.
Looks like the Cubbies could bring in a haul of prospects, if they so desired. Perhaps Theo needs to take a lesson or two from Billy Beane.

What would that be? Beane has never won a World Series and recently signed Manny Ramirez this past off season.
