What's behind the NHL's snubbing of Shero

08:20 AM ET 06.27 | In the eyes of some, Fred Shero is being punished for the transgressions of his teams in Philadelphia. The 18-member Hall of Fame selection committee has some explaining to do. The committee shamed itself, again, by bypassing [Shero] for the Hall of Fame on Tuesday. Nicknamed "The Fog," the quirky Shero was an innovator, and he directed the Flyers to consecutive Stanley Cups in the 1970s. In a six-year span, he led his teams to four appearances in the Finals, including 1979 with the New York Rangers. My gut reaction is that the committee frowns upon Shero because they think the Broad Street Bullies -- the nickname given to Shero's brawling Flyers teams of the 1970s -- soiled the NHL's image.

Love'em or hate'em, the Broad Street Bullies brought a lot of attention to the game and Shero was a winner

They had some great players on those teams.

There is no doubt that Broad Street Bullies soiled the game.

he was a winner till he came here.
but this is absurd if this is true.

30 years later we can probably name more players on their roster than we can on some current NHL teams

I had the exact same thought.

Soiled the game...?
Everybody even today knows about those guys and the Flyers. It has also even today provided a tough take no prisoners image to be a Flyer...even if the game has changed to the silly "staged one on one fights". A Flyer is known today to be a tough competitor. One of the reasons the Leafs took JVR.
I still remember the Russians skating off the ice afraid to play them. LOL

Hogwash. If that were the case, then why are Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, and Ed Snider HOF members?

Shero's boys were personally responsible for the NHL rulebook growing 300% in 1976. The man is the most influential builder since expansion. No other team changed the game so much in such a short period of time.

If the brain trust in Toronto thinks JVR is a tough competitor, they should be fired right now.

The kid is as soft as they come. He was a puhcee in college (here at UNH) and nothing has changed in last couple of years.

Simply because some opposing players soiled their pants doesn't mean they soild the game

This.

The NHL benefited from what it despised, over time you would think they could see it for what it was and honor the idea even if they don't agree with the man, instead they decide they themselves have a better definition of what hockey is and it is the people who love the sport that just don't get it.

He wont mix it up in the corners but you're wrong, he is the type of player I hated to see leave. When healthy he showed flashes of why he could have been the 1st pick. He has size and speed to break away from a pack and cut inside on defensemen when most forwards get pushed to the sides and behind the net.

He might not be a megastar but he will definitely not make the Leafs regret losing Schenn...

Spot on my friend.
The NHL and The "other" leagues do this constantly, from NBA (Denis Rodman...a jerk? yes...but they promoted the heck out of him and the "Bad Boys" in Detroit)
MLB (steroids? yeah...but wait, look at all the home runs...and the attend. is up)
NFL (don't even know where to start with these hypocrites!)
this is ridiculous.

and no one is asking him to be a mega star either nor expects it. He should be a good fit for the team and adds size to a very small group of forwards. Simply a building piece, nothing more and as far as Luke going the other way...if the Flyers can white wash the Rotten Ronnie out of his head...he could be as good as a top 4 guy. Good size and toughness, confidence became a problem under Ronnie...but why should that surprise anyone...he was only a kid when Ronnie got his paws on him.

June 27, 2012  10:19 AM ET

Because the committee is a bunch of Jack-****

True and true. They get to have their cake and eat it too thanks to others paying for it, then instead of washing their dishes they sweep them under the table pretending to have a clean house. Problem is that after awhile dishes like these start piling up and the smell will drive people away.

The NHL chases the dollar but then punishes those who bring it in at the same time, IHL and KHL are more respected and better class of hockey then why does the NHL remain at the top...
