Would Dallas shop its captain to land Doan?

08:30 AM ET 06.28 | Considering he'll turn 36 in October, Shane Doan may on the surface seem to go against what the Stars are trying to build. However, he is a good friend to owner Tom Gaglardi (sharing ownership in the Kamloops Blazers), he is a heck of a leader, and he might be a nice boost to a room that could use help in transition to the next era. Doan had 50 points (22G, 28A) in 79 games last season for Phoenix. He has played his entire life with the organization, and the odds are he will stay there. However, he has not yet signed an extension. ... The one interesting twist to this potential signing is that it could mean the Stars would then start seriously shopping captain Brenden Morrow.

I could see Doan considering it since Dallas would be a shorter move then Quebec City

Dallas needs a LOT more than Shane Doan. They've needed to go into full-scale rebuild mode since Richards left, and they haven't. And frankly, they could've gotten more for Ribeiro.

Dunno, Danny. What is the going price for a one year rental?

And - you're right. We need a LOT more than Doan.

If you can re-sign him at 4ish per, he's still worth it. The guy is going to put up 60-75 pts per season, about the same a certain former Leaf captain recently named to the Hall usually put up annually in his playing days.

The Stars really should've gotten what they could for everything on their roster and start over. But, with the ownership issue and everything, who would want to buy a hockey team in Texas that finished in last place? Still hope they work a way into contention again. Seeing Bob Gainey on the stand for them at the draft was a little worrisome though...

The damn shame is that they were sitting pretty in the West before the wheels flew off in the last month. There is a lot of youth on the team... and some nice youth at that (Erickson, Benn, Gologowski...).

But - we can't score... and our power play was abysmal (damn near historically so). We relied on Lehtonen too much to pull out victories. Our top two lines were average at best even with Ribeiro. Moving him allows Benn to play more. That is critical - he is the best player on the team but was nowhere near top minutes on the team.

As far as buying a team in Texas... they are the lynchpin for hockey down here. Youth hockey has taken off as an incredible rate. The sheets of ice in D/FW are open damn near 24/7. And... as we fans proved in the second half of the season when they were in the hunt - we will sell the shed full if they put a team out there worth rooting for.

everytime I see the Stars, I still picture them in Minnesota

You don't rebuild a club around a 36 yr old who has only played for one franchise his entire career and has maybe a couple of good years left.

You look at the past few years, and they have offloaded Richards, Neal and now Ribeiro. That's half of an excellent top six. You're right about Loui and Jamie Benn, and they did get Goligoski in return for Neal, but man i've seldom heard of a team shedding 50% of their top six and remaining a contender. The reality of it was a rethink from the ground up. Maybe they can indeed find the pieces they need, and get back to regular postseason play. I do think Benn does benefit from Ribeiro's departure. But the race last season showed just how tough it is to keep up in the West, and having to break your back just to make the playoffs isn't a pretty way to run things. Not everybody is as deep as LA.

Exactly. And if you're Shane Doan, wouldn't you want to jump into a more comfortable situation? A signing like that would put a LOT of pressure on him to help make the offs, regardless of location.

If I'm Doan, I would either stay with the same franchise or go somewhere I would have a shot at the cup.

Depends if Mrs. Doan will let him leave the state of AZ...and I would rather have Morrow on my team instead of Doan.

but they have to start somewhere, and I suppose a bit of leadership isn't the worst way to start?

I'll say this for Morrow... he's a hell of a leader. But the reality is that he is really beat up at this point of his career. I just don't know how effective he can be on IR.

I'm not sure that Doan improves that...

Gotta say Danny... no chance he should have gone in to the Hall instead of Shanny...that one really shocked me

And Doan probably would stop opposing coaches from using their walkway to the locker rooms ;)

Danny...L.A finished 8th. So isn't that kind of like, breaking your back to get into the post season?

I'd think that if he does move...it would be to a top contender.
