08:24 AM ET 06.29 | Philadelphia may not be looking for a big sell these days, but parts of its veteran roster might be moved. [The] Phillies are quietly making Jim Thome available to American League teams looking for a designated hitter, executives of two AL clubs said Thursday. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. wouldn't confirm to ESPN.com that he already has talked to other teams, but the GM would not rule out a deal that would send the 41-year-old Thome to a club that could give him more regular playing time. "The ideal situation right now, because he can't really play defense in the National League, would be for Jim to play in the American League," Amaro said. "He still has the ability to win a game for us and be productive off the bench."

I'm wondering what Philly expected in the first place? He's 41.

They wanted left handed pop off the bench and a good club house guy. Plus there was some hope that Thome would be able to play the field maybe twice a week. And he simply wasn't able to.

I think they got what they want from him....He played his butt off during the interleague play....grant it they still wont get much in return....any arm they can get for the bullpen for him has to be an upgrade.

The Yankees can send them Clay Rapada....please...

I've got news for you, Thome ISN'T going to play the field much WHEREVER he goes................

Insurance for 1B until Ryan Howard got back from injury.

Signing him was a win-win situation. He's still loved in Philly. It was hoped that he could play 1B once a week or once every few weeks. He signed fairly cheap. He did well as DH during interleague play. And MANY in Philly thought it was Jim's final run at a ring before retiring as a Phillie (wishful thinking on most parts).

It wasn't a bad signing at all, but now that it's known that he can't play the field at all, and he's got a bit of a spark in the DH role, why not see if you can't get some much needed bullpen help for him?

June 29, 2012  11:35 AM ET

hummm...........I thought his role was to come off the bench, pitch hitter. My gosh, at 41 can he still stretch out at 1st? He probably can but can he do it in stride with the throw? Yikes. Maybe the Rangers could use more pop?

The O's are looking for a veteran.

Let him play 1st base. How hard is it to play 1st? Just catch balls thrown to you.

June 29, 2012  09:50 PM ET

I don't care about Thome. The worst thing Ruben Amaro did was sign pitchers for more than 3 years. Cliff Lee is an example. We are stuck with him for 5 more years. He has two pitches now balls and base hits. Trade him to the Yankees and pay part of the contract. It will at least get him out of Philadelphia.
