08:32 AM ET 06.29 | The question now is whether Colorado will use the tens of millions it has available. The Avalanche has more than $32 million to spend under the new salary cap announced by the NHL and the players association on Thursday as free agency is scheduled to begin on Sunday. Colorado has $37.9 million committed against the salary cap, which will be $70.2 million for 2012-13. The team payroll range provides for a lower limit of $54.2 million, an adjusted midpoint of $62.2 million and an upper limit of $70.2 million. According to capgeek.com, Colorado is $32,241,667 under the cap with 15 players signed. In order to reach the cap floor, the Avalanche will need to add roughly $16.3 million to their payroll.

Av's may be a tough sell though, especially since Detroit will sign all the Fa's

Not to worry. After Detroit signs all the top available FAs, the Avs can fight for the leftovers with the rest of 'em, as it should be.

I remain the lone skeptic on Detroits ability to get all the FA's

In an effort to reach the cap floor, I hear they signed the Zamboni driver and the popcorn guy to goalie backup contracts.

And now Thomas becomes in asset again for Chiarelli, when these cap floor teams need to meet pretend money requirements, without their owner having to spend a dime of real money.

In Holland we trust .....
..... not to squander the team's resources on obscene, long term contacts with NTCs.
Lidstrom and Steve Y were about the only two players who would've been worthy of such honor. And, I'd give Big Z and Datsiuk up to 5 year deals but, that's about it. All the other chets would have to earn it ... or walk.
