08:33 AM ET 06.29 | If Sidney Crosby left some money on the table, which some believe is the case with the 12-year, $104.4 million deal to which he agreed Thursday, will Evgeni Malkin be willing to do the same? "The thing with Gino, as reigning MVP of the league, it's almost like having two kids you're equally fond of," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said Thursday. "We want to keep Gino happy and keep him a Penguin for a long time." Crosby's new deal will kick in for the 2013-14 season, the last season for which Malkin is signed. ... Malkin has not said whether he would again be willing to play for an amount equal to Crosby. In 2008 he signed a five-year contract worth $43.5 million, terms that exactly matched Crosby's deal the year prior.

Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, the Kings are reported to have struck a 10 year deal with Jonathon Quick.

I believe , as Ted Kennedy once noted, they can drive off that bridge when they come to it.

Never liked long term deals, especially if they include a NTC. I can't think of any that have worked out well for the team. There's something to be said about having to prove you're still the best every 2-3 years. Anything beyond 5 years is sheer stupidity IMO. Just ask the Canucks or ... the Islanders ... or ...

Someone was likely to sign Quick to a long term high dollar contract if the Kings did nothing. We'll see what the terms are, then we can throw darts. but as a fan, I'd rather have him locked up than search for another goalie

True. And, that's the whole problem. As long as there are GMs out there willing to throw big bucks LTCs around, the players will always get what they want.

Not sure why this contract is so baffling to some people.
Sidney wanted to stay and retire as a Penguin. He means a great deal to the organization. The way I see it, he has been taking cuts on his last two contracts. He even took a huge cut (IMHO) to stay here for the years. If he gets hurt again, there are nets/options in place to work around (LTIR, retirement, etc.) where it won't count against the cap.
So, what have been the alternative? NOT sign Sidney Crosby? Let him go because of the "what ifs?" Not in a million years. Can you imagine Shero and Mario never being able to live that down that they let Sidney Crosby leave Pittsburgh? What if he went and won another Cup with another team? Possible.
I would imagine years were the deal breaker for him.
Hope Malkin stays, and they will try like hell to keep him. However, you can't let Sid walk. No way.

As long as his retirement doesn't start to happen the day after the ink of his signature dried on his contract, a la DiPietro. I don't like LTCs with NTCs but .... that's just me.
