Darvish: I don't feel like an All-Star

08:17 AM ET 06.30 | The good news for right-hander Yu Darvish is that the American League players and the AL's manager select the pitchers for the All-Star Game. If it were up to Darvish, he wouldn't vote for himself. The right-hander said on Friday that he hasn't earned an AL roster spot for the 83rd Midsummer Classic on July 10 at Kansas City, even though he entered the day tied for the league lead in victories (10) and fourth in strikeouts (106). The rosters will be announced Sunday. The Rangers are expected to have three starters and could have two reserves and three pitchers. "Personally, do I feel like an All-Star? I don't think so," Darvish said during his scheduled between-starts chat with the media. "Am I going to be an All-Star? I don't know. Do I think I'm worthy? Probably not. Plus, there are a lot of other players who deserve it, too."

Morning Mick.

With those comments he sort of put his own manager on the spot. If I was picking the team he would be on my rooster with that kind of record and strikeouts.

He'll be on it. First of all, his numbers warrant it and secondly, his participation will have a global effect. You know that dollars count!

June 30, 2012  11:42 AM ET

Yes... Yu are!

June 30, 2012  01:22 PM ET

Good news for Rangers fans if Yu feels like he's not pitching at an all star level as of yet.

June 30, 2012  02:23 PM ET

I thinks he's a good guy and a heck of a Pitcher, he deserves to go!

June 30, 2012  02:59 PM ET

We need more of these guys in in American sports!!! Agree, he is an all-star!

June 30, 2012  06:46 PM ET

Let's simplify some stats here:

through 7 home games in a hitter friendly stadium he's allowed 16 runs = 2.2 per game

through 8 away games he's allowed 22 runs = 2.6 per game

4-2 record through 6 games vs potential playoff teams allowing 14 runs = 2.2 per game

his only 4 losses have come on the road AFTER the schedule allowed for opposing teams to have faced him a second time. In 2 of those losses the Rangers scored 2 runs or less.

nearly 7 innings pitched per game

Those are stats any manager would kill to have on his staff for the post season.

Intangibles that are not reflected in stats: team inspiring play, positive clubhouse influence, rookie season. Definitely All-Star material. You can't judge All-Star merit on just wins or just stats. You have to look at everything.

June 30, 2012  06:48 PM ET

And yes, so far he has a "3.57 ERA. and 1.38 Whip (due largely to 50 walks)". However, thus far he and the defense have prevented most of the BB from scoring. That doesn't show up on a pitchers stats (it should). A pitcher who knows his defense will help him can pitch (or walk) more liberally, going for the bigger outs.

But we are talking about his merits for the All-Star game. His BB/SO ratio is dropping favorably each month, HR's, and his era overall. The defense behind him also helps prevent the BB from scoring. Therefor if you are talking about the All-Star game (which appears to be made up primarily of fellow Rangers who know him and trust him), you are talking about having the best defense on the field behind him. So why put an unfamiliar pitcher on the mound when you can put a high-quality pitcher most of the defense already knows?

Since the All-Star game IS relevant to home field advantage for the AL, and Yu has a proven record thus far at home (where he will pitch in the post-season)against most of the potential opponents he may face in the post season, it stands to reason he can successfully compete for 6-8 innings in the All-Star game.

Also add to this the fact that while most of the AL has faced Darvish at least twice now, the NL hasn't. He is undefeated against teams facing him for the first time, allowing 15 earned runs (10 if you take away that awful first inning of his first game after which he retired 10 batters in a row over 3+ innings) in 52 innings pitched.

2.2 runs per game at 6+ innings should be by FAR enough to win an All-Star game.

I'm saying you cannot look at one or two stats and make a judgement call like this. Sometimes you have to unravel the stats and look at them in a broader scope.

Now yes, he has much to improve upon, and yes there are pitchers with better numbers. But as far as value and quality in this particular upcoming A/S game, there is a strong argument for Darvish pitching.

He isn't an All Star!! He has good stuff on a Great Team...You see Good Pitchers put those kind of numbers up all the time when they first come in to the League because hitters haven't seen his pitches or delivery. If it wasn't for the entire Country of Japan he wouldn't be going to the ASG....
