Goodell: NFL will control L.A. relocation

08:24 AM ET 06.30 | NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo about Los Angeles to the league's 32 teams Friday -- one that surely resonated with the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and any others that might be considering relocation to the nation's second-largest market. "Although substantial uncertainties remain," Goodell wrote in the two-page document obtained by The Times, "stadium development in Los Angeles has advanced to the point where the prospects for a new facility are better than they have been in many years." The purpose of the memo does not appear to be driven by any plans that might be imminent. Rather, NFL insiders say, the commissioner felt it was appropriate to set and restate some ground rules, foremost among them: It's the league -- and not an individual team -- that will control the relocation process.

Goodell is absolutely right on this. There can be no other way. The NFL is the corporation and each team is a franchise . Same as Burger King. No owner should have any complaint, they were let in to a business that has guaranteed profits no matter how their franchise performs.

It's kind of vague though.
Does that mean the NFL can pick a team in any city, even one that doesn't want to move, and tell them they have to pack their bags for LA? Or does the league simply get veto power to stop teams who want to make the move?

if a team is under earning, under attending...yes, the NFL can tell an owner, 'Sorry, but the team is going to have to move'. If a team is making a profit, they can also say, 'The team is staying put.'
The NFL itself makes enough money every year, it could handle taking over a team for a year to make an owner transition.

Rams and Raiders? No way! Rams left a long term marriage to win a title in St Lou, and the Raiders should change their name to the Traitors. Leave Oakland for L.A., leave L.A. for Oakland, now want back to L.A. again? I knew coke .**** that didn't return that many times!
Go L.A. Chargers! (for L.A.'s sake, for me it'll always be) Go Vikings!

No but what he must have is some serious dirt on all 32 owners. How else can you explain his choke hold.

Only the players are dissatisfied with him. Mega-bucks the owners are getting.

I don't disagree with you on this, 50. I just wish he'd step away from some of the other issues and let them be handled in a more appropriate forum. At least then, when he does something that makes sense, it won't draw ire just because he's the one drawing the line.

Business-wise, that would be nonsensical. Also keep in mind that the owners are the ones with the true power, as their votes would be required for any franchise to move. Why would they take a successful, profitable team and relocate them for a bit more money?

I was hoping a team would load up the moving van and run off in the dead of night. HA!

Have you seen the size of the NFL's tv deals? It means FA to NFL owners what fans think of their commissioner. He's there to maximize their revenues. He does that. So they're happy.

JJ and Bob Kraft have more say about this than Ralph Wilson or the Sheikh of Jacksonville, and I suspect that if Goodell ticked them off he would be gone.
Some teams have been underperforming for years, and there's never a word about "making" them move. The only time moving comes up, seriously, is when there's an ownership change.

If the owner is fine with not making any money then what's the problem?
Mr Steeler
Total Comments (11984)
The problem is that the owner uses the team as a write off while the fans get screwed.

Yeah that is possible but lots of owners throw bushels of money at their team and get basically no result, Dan Snyder comes to mind, so should they get orders to move? Defines fans getting screwed. No championships? Cause if that's the case then Chicago and Detroit have some serious complaining to do!!

Sure, but that doesn't affect the other owners very much, or the league as a whole. The revenue sharing, and most of the revenue, comes from TV.
The bidding wars for free agents are bad enough as it is. Can you imagine the chaos if there were 32 owners who really, really wanted to win? The talent pool isn't very deep as it is, and we need a bunch of suck teams to fill up the schedule.
