Guaranteed years holding up Weeden's contract

08:28 AM ET 06.30 | The holdup on Brandon Weeden's contract -- and that of the three players picked behind him -- is a fully guaranteed contract for all four years, league sources said today. It's the same issue that caused Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor, the No. 21 overall pick last year, to hold out for the first four days of training camp. With the NFL's new rookie slotting system, guaranteed money is usually the only point of contention. Weeden, the No. 22 overall pick, is set to receive a four-year deal worth about $8.1 million, but is intent on the fourth-year guarantee as opposed to the three that many players late in the round receive.

Weeden will be 29 this October. He could be retired from the NFL before he is even eligible for their pension system, 35 before he is ever eligible for UFA. And you wonder why that fourth year is a big deal to be guaranteed?

I am begining to believe there should only be 2 year contracts first year guaranteed second year if your not cut you sign another 1 year guaranteed and i year optional. That would stop all this hold out and tag BS

Just wait until that floor ( minimum amount a team must spend per year ) kicks in. I believe it happens next year. You will see guys getting big one year deals with all the guaranteed money in year one.
Then the other players will really gripe over their contract for that year.

You know the big time sports agents are looking for a little revenge over the rookie cap. It probably took ten or twenty million out of Rosenhaus's pocket alone.

Which one's Weeden, the old guy on the left or the old bald guy on the right?

Does it matter?

So say they give him 4 years. It doesn't say if it's 8.1 million a year, or 8.1 million spread over 4 years, but it's the same problem either way.

Unless the rules say that the rookie contract must run its course and can't be superseded by a later contract, this just invites Revis-ism. After 3 years, or even after 2, guys are going to start holding out for more money.

I just hope we still have a functioning Medicare system when his 4 years are done.

Actually, Weeden is the guy bent over at the waist mooning the camera. The other 2 guys got that jersey up just in time.

He's probably thinking I can do better just trying to get employed off his marketing degree.

Sign the contract and you should be set for life even if only 3 years are guarantee, or if not get a real job.

The one on the left. The guy on the right is a OL they drafted to help protect him.
