Ware: Cowboys defense 'going to be a lot better'

09:27 AM ET 07.01 | Despite boasting one of the NFL's top sack artists in DeMarcus Ware, the Cowboys' pass rush was lacking at times in 2011. Many pointed to Anthony Spencer, a former first round pick, for failing to take some of the pressure off Ware by being force in the pass rush on the strong side. But Ware himself seems convinced that the Dallas D will be a completely different unit in 2012, and early signs from Spencer seem to be part of the reason. "We've got Brandon Carr, [Morris] Claiborne, he's coming in. Spencer, he's really stepped up a lot. Guys are really stepping up, improving and taking on that leadership role," Ware told NFL Network, per Pro Football Talk. "From a defensive standpoint, we're going to be a lot better, playing a lot more aggressive." Ware has maintained all off-season that the Cowboys' defense is poised for a breakout year. And with a list of new additions headlined by Carr and Claiborne, as well as a full slate of off-season activities under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, anything less than an improved unit would be a disappointment. "With not having OTAs last year and a new defensive coordinator, now we've had the OTAs, we've had minicamp, we're a totally different defense," Ware said.

JJ thinks Romo is the best thing since slice bread. Defense only can't get the Cowboys into the playoffs. If Tony disappears when winter comes around as usual, the fans should stay @ home. That's the only want Jerry will make a move, $$$$$$$$$ is the only thing that gets his attention.

Being a Dallas fan, I detested our defense last year. But it was not the front line. ItI was the miserable pathetic secondary. Sending Terance Newman FINALLY packing was a huge first step. Thank the Good Lord and public transportation that he is somebody elses problem now. Filling dem shoes with Morris Claiborne is some serious gravy on the deal. It is certainly fair to say that Dallas defense could only get better. OK, point made. But add the newbies to the potential that has been there and this defense could be scary better.

I'm not a fan of any of the Ryans, Rex, Rob, or Buddy, but Ware makes a good point about last year's lockout affecting the ability of a new DC to get his system in place. It will be interesting to see how the Cowboys play this year.

Offenses will be better too since the game makes it that way. A lot more interference calls in 2012 to keep the games interesting and punish defenses.

As a Dallas fan for over 35 years, I'm going to wait until they've played at least six, real NFL games before I proclaim the defense as better than last year's train wreck.

agree... let's see how the first 3-4 games go before we start predictions. then let's see how they do at mid point, and finally how they do in nov/dec. in other words, they will be closely watched and judged on a week by week basis, as usual. if i was forced to predict a record for this bunch at this point, it wouldn't be too good.... 9-7.
