Goodell's not-so-subtle message about Los Angeles

08:05 AM ET 07.02 | St. Louis, consider this a warning shot. While it might have appeared that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell simply sent a private memo to the NFL's 32 franchise owners Friday, in reality he broadcast a clarion call to every nervous American city that has an NFL franchise playing in an outdated stadium, haggling over a bad lease or fretting over sagging local attendance. Los Angeles is officially in play as a fabulous alternative to every disgruntled pro football owner. According to the confidential memo, while he outlined procedures for franchise relocation to Los Angeles, Goodell also for the first time pronounced the nation's second-largest television market back in play for professional football as soon as the 2013 season.

Good Morning LA, Roger da Dodger is Calling!!!!

July 2, 2012  08:25 AM ET

HDTV is making pro football much more of a stay-at-home experience, and teams are pricing the seats out of the range of casual fans. State and local governments have better thngs to do with their money (wait a minute, it's our money!) than build dollar factories for billionaires.

Now, Goofdell wants to turn franchises into the same vagabonds and journeymen that players have become? Great way to kill fan loyalty, Roger.

Go read the story of The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs, Mr. Commish.

You could have gone with Good Day LA. At least that would bring to mind images of Jillian Barbieri.

Good call, DD. Think you summed things up well here.

A possible move to LA isn't exactly news to St. Louis. At least Goodell isn't being reactionary, should the Rams and CVC arbitration process fail to propose something palatable to the Rams.

Sounds like Roger is greasing the old skids in St. Louis for a move back to LA.

Not so sure. It is the trump card, but the NFL can only play it once. I think they want it forever as leverage for any new stadium. What is the next team gonna do, threaten to move to St. Louis or Jacksonville?

Even the Jags don't have much interest in Jacksonville.

The Bangkok Bangers? I think you are on to something Mr Steeler.

July 2, 2012  09:50 AM ET

Well at least I know it won't be the Vikings like everyone in MN was worried about. My guess is it will be either the Chargers or the Jaguars.

And only 11 years old, too.

I'm not sure letting NFL players loose in a place where so many things are "street legal" would be such a good idea.
