Phillies put Hamels on the block

08:13 AM ET 07.02 | In what has become a down season in City of Brotherly Love baseball, Philadelphia may be ready to sell. The Phillies dropped a bomb on the trade market when they recently began making calls to see about trade interest in Cole Hamels, CBSSports.com has learned. Hamels is a free agent after the year, and a source with knowledge of his contractual situation said there has been no progress made in contract talks. The Phillies are struggling through an injury-riddled first half. They traded Jim Thome to the Orioles on Saturday, but the team suggested that didn't mark the end of the sell-off. The Phillies may just be gauging early interest in Hamels or getting talks started in case their struggles continue.

Damnit Orioles, you traded for the wrong dude! Now get this right. I wouldn't mind trading Machado for him.

Hey, Cliff...how is that decision to take less money to win a ring working out? You could have made more money and be on a contender with a team that wanted you (Rangers). Oh well, at least you don't have to worry about being traded since you got that no-trade clause you desperately wanted.

Yeah, but you can't trade the cream of the farm system if you don't think you can sign him to a deal. If he and the Dodgers are intent on doing a deal after the season the Phillies will have a hard time finding a trade partner.

Hey, the Phils field a good team year after year. This season they are missing their two best rbi men in Howard and Utley, a top rate pitcher and reliever in Halliday and Stutes. **** happens and this year it happened to them. I'm sure the Phils will do what it takes to get back on track again. If they trade Cole, so be it, as mentioned above, contract talks weren't going well anyway.

They want 4/5 top prospects for a guy they know they cannot sign and his contract is up. Smart on their part, but unlikely to happen unless the next team can lock him up long term in the deal.
His dad lives in Boston I think, that is where he is most likely headed after this year.

The price will be too high for a rental player. Not many teams can afford what Hamels will demand. I doubt even the Yankees will participate in this scam.

He's a rental for the balance of the season. I can't imagine anyone is going to give up a lot for that.

If the Phillies would throw in one of their aging stars that has some gas left in his tank, they could get something done perhaps. Otherwise, the market will be limited.

Not sure about Hamels' mental make-up. He's a talented player but every once in a while he does something or says something that makes you question where his mind is half the time.

There's a lot of major leaguers like that. His post season performances are what you want to look at, not his twitter account.

Just because you trade Thome doesn't mean they are throwing in the towel. It is a tough call for the GM this time of the year where to foil or go all end. Hamels is a key part in the decision. You probably know you want be able to resign him but the decision is harder because of the extra wild card this year.

Part of the reason for the Thome trade was that his back wouldn't let him play in the field at all. And these days, NL teams can't afford to carry a dedicated pinch hitter anymore.
