They've already used 41 players (including eight third basemen and 10 cleanup hitters), have taken the usual action of five in-season acquisitions (Brandon Allen, Hideki Matsui, Rich Thompson, Drew Sutton and Brooks Conrad) and have made 32 transactions between Triple-A Durham and the majors. And now comes the hard part. Baseball's nonwaiver trade deadline is 30 days away. ... [With no assurances on Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria], they have to look broader for ways to bolster their offense (Alfonso Soriano is already being rumored) then make decisions closer to the deadline. There's also the theory, tossed out by ESPN's Buster Olney, that they become sellers.

You'd think the Cubs would be motivated sellers but that may not be the case. They really don't have anyone in the pipeline who could replace Soriano, so it would all depend on how much of his bloated contract they would have to eat and the player or players they would receive in return.

I'm sure Theo would have to eat just about the entire contract of Soriano's if he hopes to move him anywhere, especially to the cash strapped Rays.

there would be no hesitation by cubs if they could unload soriano along w/ getting young talent back. zambrano and soriano's contracts needed to be purged immediately upon theo's arrival. Z's contract a little more pressing considering the crazy factor and the clubhouse.

The Rays can't hit left handed pitching. That would be the one attraction for Soriano for the Rays. They need someone that hit lefties. Who knows when Longo will be back? But the Cubs would have to pick up 90% of that contract.

If the Rays want Soriano, they can have him. He's been a liability in left field for a while, so he can DH down there. Plus, the Cubs could get some young talent in return and build for the future , even if they have to eat most of Soriano's contract. At this point, I'd settle for a bag of magic beans in return.

The Dodgers probably have interest and might even take his whole contract. Probably won't give you much back though for prospects. Is it worth it from a Cubs side?
Soriano's worth less than the prospect Dodgers might send for Carlos Lee at full contract value.

Soriano would be a decent DH. His salary is ridiculous, but his production isn't non-existent and he seems to be a good leader for the Dominican/south American guys. Starlin Castro lives in his guest house and he says he's like a big brother to him. I just have a problem with the Cubs paying more than 50% of his salary to play somewhere else. Unless we get a very good prospect in return, paying a guy to hit 30 homers and 80 RBI's for a different team seems ridiculous to me.

are you serious with this quote? the Cubs are not contending this year, next year and probably not the year after.....with Anthony Rizzo up now Bryan LaHair is playing outfield anyways.....You have David DeJesus playing excellent out there and Joe Mather, Tony Camana (2nd in the majors in steals) and Joe Mather already on the team...not too mention their CF of the near future in Brett Jackson at AAA and Jose Soler, the Cuban they just signed to a 9 year 30 million dollar deal...he's only 20
