Verlander takes offense to ASG snubs

08:15 AM ET 07.02 | All-Star snubs are nothing new, but a virtual lock for the midseason classic, Justin Verlander, wasn't in a forgiving mood when it came to Austin Jackson and Joaquin Benoit. "It [stinks], really," [Verlander] said. "They got the short end of it, some guys having some great years and some big names having some good years." ... Jackson seemed to take it in stride. "I didn't really have a reaction, to be honest with you, because it wasn't anything that I was really worried about," he said. "You can't do anything about it." [Prince Fielder] looked at the bright side. "Definitely (Jackson) deserves to go, I believe, and Benoit," Fielder said. "Those two guys have done an excellent job. They know they deserve to go but they get the break instead."

And in more important news, it's hot on the East Coast.

Good grief! I thought winning was the name of the game and Verlander's whining (disingenuously?) that a couple of Tigers were left off of the AL All-Star team? That might explain how a team that broke the bank in the off-season is struggling in third place in their own weak division while still trying to reach .500.

Austin's a good young player, but he's hardly a franchise-type player. And Benoit is a very good setup man, arguably one of the best, but how many setup men, especially those who pitch for mediocre teams that have other All-Star team representatives, make All-Star rosters?

Snubs and people being left off happens ever year, lot of the deserving don't make it because when it comes down to the fan vote it ain't nothing more then a popularity contest-should be players and coaches and maybe media voting, probably over half the fans vote for there team and don't know anyone from the other teams.

You just do not get many guys from sub .500 teams.

Nope. Plus, Ron Washington is going to take his guys, not someone elses. He's the solution Verlander - get to the World Series and then your manager can pick your teammates over the other guys.

It's never going to be perfect. The voting starts so early that you can't possibly get your vote down on all the guys that had the best 1st half. The requirement to have every team represented plays a little bit of a part in this too and also voters that vote only for their own team's players regardless of how bad they're playing. What they should do is name an "ALL-MLB" team that is not based on fan voting but chosen by general managers/coaches/players and scouts.

Coaches and players make the worst picks. Look at the Gold Glove sections. They really don't see much of players not in their division.

I would like the system change to managers and players picking the teams only. It would stop big name players from making the team every year and let some of the unknown on the team.

It's ridiculous David Wright is not the starting 3B for the NL. Sandoval...really?

July 2, 2012  10:49 AM ET

any all star, especially any elected by the fans, who suddenly say he's "injured" on Sunday, should not be allowed to play when the regular season resumes. If they can't show up for their one at bat or one inning in the field, it It should 15 Day DL for those guys!

Tony Larussa also should have added Johnny Cueto and Brandon Phillips to the team, they are very well deserving but didn't because he do's not like the guys, just shows what a jerk he really is.

Justin Verlander.....
(has him escorted out the door)

Why didn't the fans select Cueto and Phillips? Why didn't the players select Cueto and Phillips?

I'm so sick of baseball fans whining about how this guy or that guy "should have" been picked and they "got snubbed". Raise hell with the voters - NOT the managers

Fans do not vote on the pitchers. I heard that La Russa didn't pick Cueto because he was pitching on the Sunday before the All Star Game and therefore would not be available to pitch in the ASG anyway.

I'm confused. Lance Lynn, a Cardinal pitcher, is on the ASG roster and he wasn't picked by LaRussa!

I heard the same reason from TLR but some fans aren't satisfied with that answer, even tho it's a freaking MLB rule!

Then I'm confused. Lance Lynn, a pitcher for the Cardinals, is on the ASG roster and TLR didn't pick any Cardinals.

Well Cueto should have been there befor Lynn , Cueto has better stats, but TLR still holding the fight against Cueto and Phillips which is not very professional.

Your correct and he is to pitch when the season resumes after the allstar game. But Tony could have given him the honor of being selected then Cueto could have denied to play,it happens every year with Pitchers and even some position players because they want the rest for a naging injury.

This game is about a joke - kind of like the NFL pro bowl.
