Bengals could sharply reduce ticket burden

08:06 AM ET 07.03 | Considering that the Bengals had a league-high six blackouts in 2011, the new blackout rules certainly resonate in Cincinnati. [NFL teams] now have the option of reducing their listed capacity by as much as 15 percent. In the case of the Bengals that means they could reduce the listed capacity of Paul Brown Stadium by as many as 9,826 seats. The official listed capacity of PBS last season was 65,515. If the Bengals, who were 9-7 last year and made the playoffs for the second time in three years, elected to reduce listed capacity to 55,689, they would then have to sell all non-premium seats to have the blackout lifted. In that case, they would have to sell 46,000 seats that are not classified as club or suites.

But... would Mike Brown ever go for this?

July 3, 2012  08:14 AM ET

Just buy a lot of tarps with Bengal logos on them. That'll class the joint up. Jacksonville rocks that look.

NFL needs to get rid of the black out rule, and concentrate more on getting fans into the seats. This only turns them away.

Can he figure out the math?

Six blackouts in 8 home games last season? Yeah, they played some uninspiring teams.

Looking at the numbers, though, at 4 of those 6 blackouts they didn't even come up to the 46,000 number.

So, if the fans won't pay outrageous prices to come to the games, let's black out the TV coverage so they won't be fans at all. The owners have to realize that they've got to make going to the game more attractive, i.e., less expensive and with a better product, if they want to get fans into the seats. Blackouts say "We don't want you as a fan."

Ah, the joys of tailgaiting in Cincinnati.

This also plays into relocating teams because it dislodges that hometeam support. Everyone's talking about LA but don't forget that Toronto would love a team (maybe the Vikings since I can't see them pulling the Bills thing off).

When you try to rip people off like COMMENT 11, selling KNOCKOFFS or The NFL $90 for a Jersey, $10 for Beer, your going to get less people to purchase from you, so now you try another avenue like comment 11 goes on our thread, like were going to buy from this guy or THE MIGTHY NFL says,
We're going to blackout you fans at Home. So if you don't see the game on TV how do they expect little Johnny to become a Bengle Fan, well I got news for you Goodell, litlle Johnny is watching College basketball during the week college football on Saturday and doesn't know the name of your starting quarterback! Go Figure! Why don't you go to LA & Try again!

with the surplus in young talent on the team I can only see their attendance going up... The team has a very bright future ahead of themselves...

They were an exciting, up-and-coming playoff team last year. The Bengals are putting a good product on the field. They had 4 low-attendance games against Cleveland, Buffalo, Indy and Arizona, and who knew in week 2 that San Francisco was going to be a team to watch. Still, they didn't sell out against Houston late in the season, either.

You can't always blame the home team when the fans want to stay home.

sounds like a laxative.

I am sure the Bengals would like to blackout Sunday Ticket also but I forgot the team gets revenue from the internet giant also.

Fans in the stands cost the team money. Ticket sales are a loss leader. Think about the expenses related to fan attendance; insurance, utilities, security, maintenance, "atmosphere" ie, music / noise, gimmie hats, bobbleheads, tee shirts, concessions, parking lot attendants, ticket takers, clean up staff, etc. It would be cheaper to lock the gates, tarp over the seats, and simply collect the TV revenue.

July 3, 2012  11:42 AM ET

Better to play all your games on the road and take the 40% split.

July 3, 2012  02:10 PM ET

Supply and demand. Lower the ticket prices and get a real and true sellout instead of a paper sellout.
