Surprise suitor for Nash or Ryan

08:25 AM ET 07.03 | When George McPhee looks at the riches burning a hole in his pocket, he doesn't have any great urge to spend it. [McPhee] was asked last week about how tempting it was to enter July 1 with $20.8 million in cap space, he raised a cautionary flag. "It's expensive to use it now," the Caps GM said. "If you do something, it's always more than the guy's worth. The question is how much more, and are you trying to trade him by November because he cost too much?" McPhee is apparently taking his own advice. ... But that does not necessarily mean McPhee is finished tinkering with his roster, which is in need of a top-six winger and a No. 4 or No. 5 defenseman. In fact, the Capitals could be quietly involved in trade talks for Anaheim's Bobby Ryan or Columbus' Rick Nash.

I'm actually surprised this is the first time I've heard the Capitals in the conversation. They'd be an excellent fit for either of those players.

but there's nothing in this article that says this is more than speculative codswallop.

Regardless, nothing will happen til the Suter and Parise chips fall. Then others will start talking.

No No No Spiny you are wrong they said, "In Fact" that means there is fact in there or why else would they say it? It's like saying, "With all due respect" you can say whatever you want after words with out ramifications.

Nothing would be a surprise. Okay, if the Bruins acquired either player that would be a surprise.

Too bad he figured that out after signing Joey Crabb.
Canuck eh?

It'll be interesting. I like the fact that McPhee doesn't do all of his negotiating at a press conference or GM meeting. Quiet, behind the scenes, get it done and then announce it. Sort of the anti-Burke.

You never hear much about the Caps, because according to most threads every FA is going to the RedWings.

I think the hire of Oates recently might help attract them (and some others) too.

Nope. Bobby Ryan is coming to the Flyers after Parise signs elsewhere.
