Where kickers have it all over running backs

08:07 AM ET 07.04 | Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be running backs -- if they can kick, that is. Veteran running backs are having it rough these days. And the muscle-bound ball carriers are getting dirt kicked in their faces by the 98-pound weaklings. The contract signed Monday by Broncos kicker Matt Prater proves once again that first-tier kickers are getting paid as much or more than second-tier running backs. Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Prater received a four-year, $13 million deal, with $4.25 million fully guaranteed. He also can make an extra $350,000 in 2013, 2014, and 2015 if he makes the All-Pro team in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively.

The other thing about kickers is they are more likely to play enough years to enjoy the full benefits of their contract. RBs have the shortest life span of any position.

They are worth it sometimes. Consider the Pats. With adam vinatieri in superbowls 3-0 No vinatieri 0-2

Yep, how many games have been lost by 3 or fewer? As much garbage as everyone talks, they really are an invaluable piece to the puzzle.

Mick, he's still a kicker. So, it's +3 (or 1 if it's just the EP).

Last one hired, first one fired. You can be mediocre and stick around at a lot of positions. Miss a few kicks and see what happens.

Reading the title, I thought that FN was posting a rare thread on Aussie Rules Football. Oh, well. Go, Port Adelaide!

And just to rub it in a bit more all you RB's, let's put up a picture of a kicker who gets to play half his games at altitude.

This contract for Prater tells all you need to know about Tebow Mania. The defense and the kicker were why the Broncos won 8 games and not Tebow.

The defense *and* the kicker told a different story than you. Since they were closer to the action, I will believe them.

Prater needs to think the man for letting him kick in that nice Mile High air.
