Braves, A's working on trade

The Braves might soon have the short-term veteran center fielder they've been looking for, and Mark Kotsay sounds excited about the possibility of coming from Oakland to fill the role. Athletics general manager Billy Beane called Kotsay on Friday and told him they were discussing a trade to send the 32-year-old center fielder to the Braves for a mid-level prospect. The A's would also have to agree to pay a significant portion of Kotsay's $8 million salary in 2008.

Congrats A's fans! Expect yet another year of being the rest of the leagues farm team! I thought that title was reserved for KC or TB or any other team that doesn't really want to win. Exactly how is paying Kotsay to play in Atlanta in order to get a future Double A bust good for business ... ?

I'm a big Billy Beane supporter and always have been. The guy has turned a small market team that has no business competing with teams like the Red Sox and Yankees and their payrolls into just that. A contender. Year-in and year-out, they compete for a playoff spot and, at times, seem to overachieve in doing so. With thier payroll, it's nothing short of amazing. That being said, why make this move? Cheesy Texan is right. If you're going to send him elsewhere for something, why does it not seem worthwhile? Kotsay's prime years are gone, but he can still be a productive player, and he's a gold-glove caliber outfielder. A mid-level prospect AND you're still on the hook for a portion of his salary? Come on...

This is just full out rebuilding now. Blanton should be in a different uniform anytime now...

It would great for the Braves.

January 12, 2008  09:00 AM ET

hasn't KC been a buyer the last couple of years?

The A's don't really compete with the Yanks and the Red Sox, if they were in the same division they would have made it to the playoffs a whole lot less. Billy does do a good job.

January 12, 2008  10:04 AM ET

they always do this but still find a way to be competitive. unlike kc and tb....they ctually get the real good prospects.

about dada gum time you try to acquire a quality cf atlanta

January 12, 2008  03:21 PM ET

As a Braves fan, I'm very excited about the possibility of having Kotsay join the Braves. I've seen FSN bay area & it's clear Kotsay has a great sense of humor & plays the game to his full ability. That said: as an A's fan, as well, I can't see why Beane would do this, paying some of his salary as well.

January 12, 2008  03:49 PM ET

Kotsay was always marginal, but now with the crappy back he is worthless and Beene knows that.

January 12, 2008  03:59 PM ET

I guess those young Center Fielders that Atlanta have won't be holding the spot. I thought Atlanta had talent...

Oh well.

F The Braves!

January 13, 2008  01:35 AM ET

More Beene trading away fading talent to acquire young talent that will compete for years to come. I think that Beene is a Genius, and he is able to keep a very small market team appearing to compete. They can't compete of course, because they don't have the money. Since baseball is all about money, steroids, hgh, liers, and recordbooks full of the same I believe I will tune out this year. I have had enough of this crap. I am an A's fan for 20 years and this is it.....

January 13, 2008  02:34 AM ET

maybe the A's can sign the "Bash Brothers" again........then they can change their name to the "Oakland Steriods & Mullets"

January 13, 2008  12:04 PM ET

The Moneyball fire sale continues. Who's next, Blanton? Chavez anyone? Any takers? Huston Street? Go all the way, Billy. Better yet, swing both ways, Billy.

January 13, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Wrong Billy Beane, Juice Boy. You're thinking Billy Bean, the former Padre, Dodger and Tiger.

January 13, 2008  02:05 PM ET

Billy has made some collosal mistakes, betting the farm on Chavez (who has never lived up to his potential ) in lieu of Miguel Tejada and signing Milton Bradley when every one else knew he was a cancer. Like FaStRmAN I have been a long time A's fan (30 years) and despite the fire sell it still will be fun to sit in the sun and enjoy a dog or two.

January 13, 2008  02:12 PM ET

Milton wasn't a cancer. The guy was a great team player and there was never any indication otherwise in Oakland. With the emergance of Buck and Cust, he became expendable. Chavez has had injury issues, and while he hasn't been as productive as he was earlier in his career, they had a young prospect in Bobby Crosby who played short. The problem has been with keeping players healthy, not with the talent. You can't blame Beane for guys getting hurt.

January 13, 2008  09:14 PM ET

as a braves fan, i am excited. joey devine can not play in the majors at a high level, we have seen that. kotsay is a good cf with a pretty good bat. in the braves lineup he has a real chance to hit .300 with 10-15 hr's.

this also adds another veteran to the clubhouse and now they do not have to rush a prospect. you just made a "scheurholtz like" move there wren.

January 14, 2008  04:39 PM ET

Bradley was a cancer and Billy had enough of him as witnessed by their high publicity shouting match. Crosby will never be another Tejada, he can't stay on the field long enough for one reason, and two he can't hit the outside pitch. He backs off the plate too much (perhaps because he can't hit the inside pitch either). If anything, they should have dumped Chavez and put Crosby at third and kept Tejada at short. Like others say, Billy needs to keep salaries down while in Oakland so all of this analysis about current and past stars is probably moot.
