08:18 AM ET 07.04 | Hopes of seeing a return to the rotation for Chris Carpenter ended Tuesday. Carpenter will undergo season ending surgery after recurrences of numbness and weakness made it evident that the right-hander would be unable to pitch through thoracic outlet syndrome this year. Surgery is scheduled for July 19 and will be performed by Dr. Gregory Pearl in Dallas. According to Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak, the usual recovery time for such a procedure is 3-6 months. That leaves the Cardinals confident that Carpenter, who is in the first season of a two-year, $21 million contract, will be at full strength at the start of Spring Training in 2013. Carpenter said on Tuesday that he has every intention of pitching next season.

Happy Fourth to you to.

This is somewhat of a punch to the gut for the Cards. I'm glad to see that Mozeliak is already talking about acquiring a starting pitcher. With innings concerns for Lynn and Wainwright, and Garcia still out......this rotation needs an upgrade.

the worse obstakle for the angels in this new month its nobody else but, dan haren santana, and richards this 3 pitchers would send the halos farther down from the rangers why??because all 3 combine for more runs given more homeruns given than any other pitcher on any rotation!!

Hi Mick, Happy Fourth, Big Ben RIP! Carpenter might want to entertain retirement, I know that's a tough decision!

July 4, 2012  12:29 PM ET

maybe mike sciocia refuse to acknowledge the poor pitching from haren santana richards, plus he its well aware about the pitchers mechanics are far off from the right tune,, yasterday i knew that haren was going to blow the game after all he has being doing that for the last 4 games just as santana has done it and richards has been doing it,,,, should sciocia use another pitchers in place of this erratic pitchers???

Mr. Cran I was wondering if you read the article before commenting. I had to go back and read it a second time and still didn't read a word about the Angels.

Actually, he had an unusually low number of consecutive posts.

Seems like a decent guy, just a bit of a rambler.

Surely you're not implying that ANYONE connected with the St. Louis National League Baseball Club would EVER ingest any type of performance enhancing substances, are you ??

I've been expecting this. Carpenter has chronic nerve issues. He needs to retire while he still has a chance of living his last decades with all his parts moving properly. Once he got the diagnosis this year, I never expected him back. I thought there was a 50/50 tchance that he'd ever come back.

Anyone think they would pony up the money for Hamels now that he's on the block? They have the prospects. Just don't send Craig anywhere. He's Albert's replacement for the next few years.
