08:19 AM ET 07.04 | Ah, to be Bryce Harper. [Harper] says he would love the opportunity to play in the All-Star Game on July 10 in Kansas City. But he also says he would love the opportunity to go home to Nevada and rest -- something Manager Davey Johnson would like his young star to do. Harper has stumped for Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones. ... Johnson -- who humorously didn't understand the final all-star spot process, at one point asking if the votes were mail-ins -- said he preferred that Harper not be selected so he can rest. "Chipper should be on it, period," Johnson said. "Not somebody with 200 at-bats, first year. But that's just my way of thinking." Harper has started in all but one of the 57 games the Nationals have played since he was called up on April 27.

200 AB, 8 HR, .279 BA, OBP .349--great numbers for a 19 year old playing in the majors, but not All-Star numbers. He will earn a spot in the All Star game soon enough. Johnson is a smart manager; let him work for his rewards. He has the talent, but if you just give him stuff he hasn't earned his head will just keep swelling and the talent may not get developed.

Concur. There are other more deserving this season. The kid will make plenty of AS games in the future.

I am on your side on that Mr. Bishop. Johnson has lost the fact that players are playing this game to win. If the Nats make it to the big show in Oct. and NL wins the all star game Jonson will never remember these comments he made in July.
