Why the Knicks struck out with Nash

08:11 AM ET 07.05 | Steve Nash, who spends much of his summer in New York City's West Village, won't be making it his winter home. Nash ditched the Knicks Wednesday as their sign-and-trade talks were extinguished when the two-time MVP told the Suns he wanted to be a Laker. ... Indications are the Knicks never were a major option for Nash. His agent, Bill Duffy, told The Post that though Nash felt he could have helped the Knicks compete for a title, the Knicks were hurt by their location. Nash's No. 1 priority was playing in a city close to where his three kids live -- Phoenix. "That was 90 percent of it," Duffy said of the location. "And I say that respectfully to the Lakers."

So I guess Nash was talking out of his arse the other week when he said he was old school and was about beating the best teams and not joining forces with them...
I don't have a problem with him going to the Lakers or wanting to go there. I just don't understand why he would make that comment, then beg Sarver to trade him to LA.
Great move by the Lakers. He and Kobe can retire together in 2-3 years. Congrats Laker fans.

Nice try by the NYT to show disrespect to the Lakers organization by taking Duffy's quote as gospel in saying that Nash's choice to sign with the Lakers was mostly to be close to his kids. While I believe that was huge for him, he also wants to win a title and with no disrespect to my Knicks friends... Given the two franchises, where would he have a better chance of winning the ultimate NBA prize?
He could have gone with the Clippers, Mavericks, Rockets or Spurs to stay relatively close to his kids. If being close to his kids was 90% of his decision, he should have stayed in Phoenix and been 100% in their neighborhood.
Sour grapes NYT, sour grapes!

I wasn't so keen on him coming to Knicks cos he's damn too old. This should be as a blessing disguise as this gives Knicks the opportunity to retain Lin, sign Felton or Sessions and also replace Fields with Rashard Lewis...

Don't see Lin have a break-out season. He was a baller til opposing coaches put him in the game plan. After that Lin was a turnover machine worse than Larry Drew II.

He comes at a cheap cost and is a better shooter than Fields... I haven't seen him play lately but I'd like to think he'll be a better bench player than Fields@ 19M...

Lin is not a sure bet so I won't be thrilled if he's the annoited starter going into next season. That's why we need to get a proven point like Sessions or Felton.

I'm not surprised by Nash decision.....close to his kids and a chance to compete for a title, good for Nash. That said..........Sessions, Felton IMO are better than Lin but I'm not blown away by them. At this point the Knicks don't have a lotta options other than not foolishly matching any outrageous offer for Lin. There is an undrafted PG out there and the Knicks should explore this option before foolishing blowing up their cap situation further with Lin. Lin seems to be everybodys Matt Cassell or Kevin Kobb. A year or two from now all the Knicks haters will be bashing us relentlessly about this bogus signing of Lin if it happens......I'm praying it don't!
