Dumars may not be done dealing

08:12 AM ET 07.05 | While players explore free agency, it's probably worth noting that the Pistons are in danger of taking a luxury tax hit. But that does not mean that Pistons president of basketball of operations Joe Dumars can go golfing before training camp opens Oct. 1. When all the hoopla surrounding free-agent point guard Deron Williams, Magic center Dwight Howard and others subsides, teams will test the trade market. It's pretty easy to see the Pistons as candidates for trade possibilities. The Pistons seem to have been open to trading Charlie Villanueva since they signed him to a five-year, $35-million deal in the summer of 2009. ... With the glut at small forward, Austin Daye looks expendable.

Umm the Piston and Dumars in particular seems to fill the bill of " if you're looking for an average team player, call on us". Since the Pistons won there last ring the Pistons and Dumars have digressed horridly. It started with Dumars not offerring Wallace the money he deserved thereby derailing their added championships goal. He then effectively turned the Pistons into the PG, SG, SF academy and developmental stomping grounds for other NBA teams. All this and YES "Dumars still has a Job" heading the Pistons..........laughable!

What has Melo won in the NBA? He's supposedly a great player, yet has been to the conference finals exactly how many times in his career, one? WOW impressive. He's the only pick in the top 5 of the 2003 draft who doesn't have a ring.
Like any GM Joe's made some bad moves (Gordon and Charlie V obviously) but also had some really good drafts recently. Monroe and Knight are two cornerstone players you can build a team around. Adding Drummond was a really nice pick.
You also have to consider for two seasons the franchise was in a holding pattern as the franchise was up for sale. The owner passed away and the wife wanted nothing to do with owning an NBA team, so Joe couldn't make any trades that would add payroll.

One of the smart moves Dumars did was not giving Ben Wallace the money he wanted back then and letting him walk. Wallace was nothing but a two trick pony. Rebounds and block shots. He had no offensive game what to speak of.
The Bull's signed Ben to the huge deal thinking that he was their anwser in the low post. But after getting him, they found out that his game had started to go down hill. And teams would not double team him in the low post because Ben has no offense in the no post. The Bulls gave up on Wallace and sent him to the Cavs to get away from that contract they gave him.

Actually I find it quite difficult. What do the Pistons have that anybody wants??

The point of it all was that the Pistons indeed won a championship with Ben. Ask Cuban how's unloading Chandler, Stevenson, Butler, Barrera work out for him? Never break up success...the presidence has been made ala Chicago Bulls.....96,97,98......ala Jordan/Pippen/Jackson. In the end, the very point you missed is the Piston won with Wallace and haven't since. Enough said!

But would you say that Melo is better than Darko? Thats the key...its about who he chose OVER Melo. And in case u havent noticed, the only reason 2 of those guys got rings is because they teamed up with Wade so....dont totally discount what kind of player Melo is. Darko didnt exactly earn his ring with DET.
And you HAVE to knock Joe D's decisions the past few years. Giving BIG $ to Ben G. and Charlie V...really? The bad drafts (except Knight & Monroe are going to be solid players) along with free agent blunders turned a perennial contender into a step above the Bobcats/Raptors

Don't forget his dumbly resigning Prince last offseason. Prince is a solid player on a good team and the contract isn't awful, but in a rebuilding situation he really doesn't offer anything and takes up minutes that could be used to at least try to develop young guys.
