Scorned Poile stunned by Suter

08:32 AM ET 07.05 | July 4th was not a good day for Predators general manager David Poile, for whom the asking price may have gone up on the prized defenseman, Shea Weber, who remains on the roster. For more than 16 minutes Wednesday, [Poile] rambled during a teleconference. He sounded like a patient on a psychiatrist's couch, venting and unloading as he tried to explain to reporters why former Predators defenseman Ryan Suter decided to sign with the Minnesota Wild. "I was looking at all my notes (Tuesday) on stuff, and Ryan had said, when we had a meeting in November with (his agent) Neil Sheehy, he said at the time that he's not going anywhere else. He's signing with the Nashville Predators," Poile said. "It's a quote."

2012's Dan Gilbert.
The fact is, you are a bad GM, you held on to a prized asset and lost him for nothing when you should have dumped him during the season for pieces that would help your team in the future. You still had a great goaltender, and another season to convince the other half of your dynamic D duo to remain with the club.

Poile needs to pull up his big boy pants and move on.

Yup.
With 20-20 hindsight he should have done what Shero did with Staal.

Exactly. "He said he's not going anywhere". So...draw up a contract and put his signature on it? Oh, he DIDN'T do that? Huh, imagine that.

Bad GM?
He has built a great team in Nashville. He held on to Suter because he thought they had a chance at winning the cup, and thought he had a chance to resign him. I don't know if he ever really had a realistic shot at resigning him, but apparently the money was there for him in Nashville. But I do know, they had a good chance at winning the Cup and were one of the favourites.
I would have kept him too.

Minny still isn't very good. I think Suter is overrated and greatly benefited from having the best defenseman in hockey as his partner. Parise benefited from a good playoffs, but hasn't been the same since his major knee surgery. I like Parise, but he isn't gonna make a team.
At this point, at best I see Minny finishing 6th in the West.

And you always see the Leafs making the playoffs. Pardon me if I don't take your prognostication seriously.
Canuck eh?

actually, he makes a good point. Suter has a lot to prove I think. As does Parise. let's face it, Setagouchi and Heatly are hardly Ilya Kovalchuck

he should have offered these guys some good extentions a few years ago. Fact is that he let his three best players all become mega free agents at the same time.
But really, if theres someone to blame here its not Poile, I think that he did everything that he could placed in his circumstances, the true problem here is the ownership which are too cheap to pay the players. Check out the contract situation, this team is likely to be completely gutted. Its really, really, really sad because I would have liked to have seen the Preds remain competitive.

Completely different beast altogether. I have absolitely no doubt in my mind that STaal was completely up-front about his wants & he sat down with Shero to plan out the best move for everybody.
I think it was a good move for everyone involved, but a huge part of that is because Staal dealt in good faith and most likely told Shero that if he shipped him to Carolina he would likely sign there long term. Works for Carolina, works for Staal and it worked out well for the Pens.
If Suter was never willing to be up-front with his intentions & if he wasnt willing to guarantee he would sign then the value isnt there.

I struggle iwth this all the time, as a Devil fan. Because Lou rarely if ever trades away a pending UFA, even if he knows they will be gone (Gomez and Neids). He says he tries to win the cup each year.
So if you think you have a shot at the cup, do you roll the dice and go for it (I assume Nashville did) or do you always trade pending UFA's?
