Philly's huge loss on the blue line

08:33 AM ET 07.05 | It didn't take long after Ryan Suter signed in Minnesota for the Matt Carle domino to fall into the Lightning's lap. Carle's loss is huge, no matter how you cut it. He's going to score 40 points a season. [Bruno Gervais] will get half that many. Gervais' career-high was 19 points a few seasons ago as an Islander. He is a fifth or sixth defenseman on the Flyers right now. While the Flyers are expected to continue their efforts to fortify their defense, Carle's price was expected to balloon to $5.5 million a year or more because of the trickle down effect of the Dennis Wideman signing, and that's exactly what happened. Which is why general manager Paul Holmgren passed on him and was willing to overpay for Suter.

Than indeed, who can Philly now get to "fortify"?

DION. PHANEUF. Come on, they're desperate, right?

Never believed they wanted Parise or Suter, thought they were driving up the price for rival bidders. Carle is a good D man but not a 5.5 for 6yrs... glad they didnt take the cap hit.

Weber was plan A in my mind, trade coming.

I trust you would be holding the door open for him on the way out?
Phaneuf for Briere...you'll take that, right?

There's not much left to choose from on the FA front.

When they fortify wine don't add brandy? Sounds like exactly what they need in Philly about now.

They were too busy chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to notice that a very good D-man was walking away right from under their noses. Dumb!

Don't tease me like that...I'd settle for Giroux.

They're going to be pushing the cap regardless next summer, and with Hartnell a UFA to boot and due a pretty substantial payday if he plays again like he did last season, not to mention Giroux the year after. Weber will easily command 8 per, and I don't think that's in Philly's budget.

Burke might turn that one down :)

Flyers so far in the offseason

Leighton for Bob (essentially)
Carle gone
JVR for the other Schenn

Certainly wouldn't call this a stellar offseason thus far for Holmgren

I thought I read that after the Kessel trade MLSE put one of those breathalyzer ignition kill switches on his phone.

Is that who keeps prank calling me at 3:30 am asking me if I could come back and coach? Last night he said "they call you Rotten but I think you're BEAUTIFUL"...

Yeah but he just gets his secretary to blow for him.

Who knew Dion Phaneuf was useful OFF the ice too?!
