Detroit's next move

08:37 AM ET 07.05 | Ryan Suter and Zach Parise somewhat purposely tied in the race to sign this offseason's richest contract, reportedly in excess of $90 each over 13 years. Though the Wings would have given that to Suter had it come down to that, they weren't going anywhere near a $7.5-million average salary cap hit for a small winger like Parise, who last season had 69 points. If they're going to take on that kind of contract for a forward, it'll be by trading for Columbus' Rick Nash, a 6-foot-4 behemoth who'd be a 40-goal scorer next to Pavel Datsyuk. ... A likelier course of action is trading. Calgary's Jay Bouwmeester, 28, is a great skater, capable of eating up 25 minutes a game, and he could rediscover his offensive skills playing in Detroit's system.

forgive me, but if, as the writer seems to be suggesting here, Parise and Suter acted in concert (do they have the same agent?) wouldn't that be somewhat akin to colussion?

Akin, but a) Free agency legitimizes collusion among players, and b) Collusion as an illegal act in the sports world would entail multiple teams conspiring to drive down the cost of employing players.

well, if collusion is acting together to achieve some manner of financial gain...how indeed can it ever be legit?

It shouldn't be hard to fix. There's lots of collusion repair shops in most cities.

No.....maybe agents though!

What makes it illegitimate though? The unfairness to teams that didn't get the players?

LOL. Not really. I don't know what the answer is but your frustration is shared. Agents are a "third party...........not management, not labor....just vampires"

Timbo's gonna be on the Limpic team as Henk would say. Do you think we'll hear much about, or from, him in the coming season?

Thanks for holding the line, Ken. We still have a formidable team .... without mortgaging our future. Can't speak for the Wild but, I know we'll make the playoffs. Because .... we have Gustavsson ... and ... the Tootoo force on our side! :-)

Can Dats play D?

If he somehow makes his way to Toronto or Detroit. Boston better be prepared to receive next to nothing for him though...

"a 6-foot-4 behemoth who'd be a 40-goal scorer next to Pavel Datsyuk." So the upside of Nash is if he plays next to Datsyuk? That makes sense...but the trade wouldn't make sense. In terms of the player they'd try to get, I understand it for the Wings, but CBJ has been/will ask for a ton and the Wings don't have a ton to give. The Wings never have good draft position and usually deal their first, and in addition CBJ would ask for major pieces already playing for the Wings.

And the Wings, as their roster is set now, cannot give up multiple pieces of their team. What would they be asked to give up, Kronwall, Mule, Helm (all?)? I highly doubt CBJ will enterain thoughts of Bertuzzi, the Monster, Tootoo, Eaves, Miller.

QUOTE(#10):

possibly. Supposing (and it may be a big supposition) that Zach and Ryan (or the agents) decided that they were not taking less that XXX dollars and XXX years, and they had to go together. All the teams with either cap issues (kill the cap) or maybe a need for one and not the other...or maybe a GM with an ounce of sense that won't sign anyone to a 13 year deal...have just been taken off the table.

no, he'd make a better agent...or owner

Yup, always enjoyed Ken's patience. It was good of him to make an offer and stick to it, if the number was as reported. I feel that the "Lidstrom salary cap" will keep in place with the Wings for a while...no one will make more than what Lidstrom made.

Ken's always done some good work with adding some pieces through trade; he just has more work to do. But, just have to wait out the season and see who's tanking and ready to deal.

yes because he will be traded to the Leafs in exchange for a first round pick.
