08:16 AM ET 07.06 | Considering his team's struggles, the road hasn't been so rocky for Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. On the road to 100 losses, [Gonzalez] could boldly go where no ballplayer has gone before. Could Gonzalez win the Most Valuable Player award while playing on the worst team in the National League? It's not easy to lose 100 games in a season, although the Rockies are trying. No thanks to CarGo. ... [At the season's midpoint], Gonzalez is a threat to finish first in the league among all three Triple Crown categories of batting average, home runs and runs batted in. Consider the more advanced OPS metric, which measures a player's ability to reach base while also slugging with power, and CarGo is off the charts.

Right, it's been done before, but maybe the writer was too young to know it. I thought Steve Carlton did it for the Phillies but he won the Cy Young not MVP in 1972.

It's rare that you read a cheerleading article from a local paper. That "off the charts" OPS of Gonzalez's ranks 7th in the NL, almost 100 points behind league leader, Joey Votto. There is only a slim chance of Gonzalez winning the triple crown or MVP.

I thought the same thing until I looked up the NL standings for 87. The Cubs finished last in the East, but would have finished 3rd in the West.

Dawson did it with the Cubs, Ernie Banks won it 2 Years in a row 58-59 when the Cubs finished in fifth place in the old league which had 8 Teams at the time, before expansion!

The odds are not in his favor of being the MVP of the NL because being on the worst team in the league most teams will just pitch around him.

Wasn't it last year that Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander won the AL MVP? Maybe we could start a campaign to give the Cy Young award to CarGo.

Did anyone read the article? He said lose ONE HUNDRED GAMES and still be MVP. Did Dawson lose 100 games and win MVP? You all might need to take your ADHD medication.

The Cubs were 76-85 that year. Last place and 18 1/2 games back.

I think the MVP should be the best player, not the best player on a winning team, its not a team award, but he probably won't because the voters won't vote for players on losing teams, otherwise Matt Kemp would have won last year.
