Tannehill likely to start '12 on Fins' bench

08:48 AM ET 07.08 | Nothing will be determined until training camp, but this is the expectation that has emerged inside the Dolphins: Look for a tight competition between David Garrard and Matt Moore for the starting job, with Ryan Tannehill likely to begin the season on the bench. Judging from offseason practices open to the media and feedback from multiple people, including players, Garrard has been the most impressive of the three, but not by a wide margin over Moore, who rallied the final two days of minicamp. Tannehill isn't completely out of the running and could play at some point this season. But he got by far the fewest first-team snaps and it was an issue to the point that he went to Philbin and offensive coordinator Mike Sherman to discuss it in mid-June. (Tannehill confirmed those discussions.)

That's somewhat of an oxymoron "starting on the bench". Then again, it speaks volumes of the way the Fins have handled many of their business decisions.

So what we're seeing here is that everyone else was right about Tannehill (lots of potential, but not NFL ready) and that he wasn't a top 10 pick. Way to go, Phins!

Would be a nice switch some game for the announcers to introduce the "bench starters" for both teams.

Let Tannenhill ride the bench the majority of the year so that he can learn and not get the tar beaten out of him by opposing defenses. Miami isn't ready to compete with the big boys yet.

Most people who post on this site had written that conclusion months ago. But it takes time to build a contending team, and time to develop a good NFL QB. Other teams have ruined higher draft picks by starting them too early.

Absolutely. And if you read the article, one of the problems Tannehill has is holding onto the ball too long, which will guarantee him taking a beating if they try and force him into being a starter now. The big issue remains that he was drafted higher than he should have been by a franchise that has repeatedly screwed up personnel decisions.

Wouldn't be the first time... Certainly not the last.
And - Eagles described a crumpet about as well as I could. They are damn good with a spot of tea in the morning.

As a Fins fan for 40+ years.... I should resent that remark, but if you're right, you're right. However, it was the Miami Herald that wrote that oxymoron.
