NASCAR ticket revenues in sharp decline

10:48 AM ET 07.08 | The green flag dropped on Saturday night's Coke Zero 400 NASCAR race with all 57,000 seats in Daytona International Speedway's backstretch grandstands empty. With decreased demand, NASCAR's most famous track never offered those seats for sale, in stark contrast to the days when sellouts were routine at Daytona and most other tracks on racing's premier Sprint Cup series. NASCAR, which has a big footprint in the Charlotte area and was once viewed as the country's fastest-growing pro sport, continues to grapple with perhaps its most troubling ongoing challenge: declining ticket sales. Actual NASCAR attendance figures are difficult to come by, but according to securities filings, ticket sales revenue fell by 38 percent over the past five years at its three publicly traded companies, which host 35 of the 38 race weekends -- 36 points races and two special events.

Of course, it's about how fewer and fewer people actually want to pay to watch NASCAR, but beggars can't be choosers....

Nicely done WWJ! , you guys bring a freshness to this thread, Thanks! On the news: B.F. has been running the sport into the ground.

I don't know, juan seems headed for the avatar I created for him, followed by a lot of muffled screaming from him.

Let's see, times were very good for a while and people bought tickets even though the prices were crazy. The economy goes in the tank and the folks who run the show at NASCAR and it's various tracks are slow to make adjustments in the ticket prices. It seems hardly shocking that attendance would drop.

Throw in competition factors like the Sally-Boy plate racing at their two premier Super Speedways and phantom debris cautions which serve no purpose other than to manufacture drama at the expense of a potential race winner (among others) and you have a sport that appears to be trying to kill itself.

Now is there a bounty on Danica or what:) She escapes a major accident, only to get taken out on restart. How many times is she right up front only to get tagged

I'm OK with it.

Have to totally agree -- as I stated previously ... "only one word to can describe Daytona -- BORING! Except for the last ten laps ... may as well record it and just watch that portion of the race. UGH!!!!!" NASCAR is driving nails in their own damn pine box!

Not racing -- but the USA stick and ball team whipped the world team 17-5 ... congratulations!

No.

I agree with the above comments but NASCAR giving the finger to their long time Southern fans and Southern roots caused fans to stop paying for tickets as well.

I can't believe what I am reading. How is daytona anymore boring than freaking michigan or california or kansas, texas, las vegas I could go on and on. Its not "plate racing" that is killing the sport. Maybe the last 10 laps are only exciting but here lately its the best 10 laps in the sport. Don't you guys understand that if you take the plates off its the worst race ever to watch? It will be way worse than california. So spread out it would be pathetic. I agree with all the other points, just not plate racing. I look forward to daytona and dega. I also enjoy short tracks and road courses. They can have the others. If you like "FAST" spread out racing where every car but maybe 7 is on the lead lap, then have at it.

Perfect! Finally someone other than me understands...They took Wilkesboro, The Rock, 1 Darlington race, and turned Atlanta from a great configuaration into a cookie cutter of Charlotte. They built new tracks based off how many people they could pack in and bam you get a watered down boring schedule and no one within nascar wants to blame anything but the economy. Plus the cars are too easy to drive making every race even more boring. No one says my tires are gone anymore or the handles gone. Im sorry but the upper tier of stock car racing SHOULD have cars that are hard to drive.

What is more important, ticket revenue or television revenue?

Went to Ky race and then To Daytona race last weekend. Ticket price at Ky $120 for the cup cars and at Daytona $158 for cup cars and these are not the most expensive tickets you can get.. In todays economy its hard for a family to offord those prices. Ky was sold-out 101,000 but Daytona was maybe 3/4 full. Then you get inside the tracks and they bend u over and stick it to u on the concession prices, A beer and cheeseburger going to set you back about $15 now say you and your wife and 2 kids are getting a drink and a sandwich yer gonna drop a quick $30 or $40 each trip to the concession stand. Then to buy a souveneer shirt thats another $30 per shirt.

Maybe NASCAR ought to look at lowering the prices and making it more affordable to familys in todays economy and maybe sells will increase. If not look for more decline in ticket sells.

the racing is boring at the plate tracks (compared to what is used to be) but the worst is the cookie cutter drivers who have no personality. the sport just hasn't been the same without #3.
