11:01 AM ET 07.08 | Despite reports to the contrary, the PGA Tour doesn't allow appearance fees, but as tournament officials have become more savvy the practice of doling out back-door appearance fees has become common. Word on the practice range this week is that both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson received "show up" money for this week's Greenbrier Classic. Perhaps the most disturbing part of this is that some have used the occasion to suggest it may be time to open Tour tee sheets up to the highest bidder.

Holy crap a new golf article! Read it slow guys, it's got to last you!!!!!!!!

July 8, 2012  01:53 PM ET

Wow, after a month and a half, that's the best they could scrape out of the bin?

July 8, 2012  02:01 PM ET

I don't really have an opinion on this article, I just want to post something before a new article pops up. Whew, made it!

How much money does it take to get them to show up? They are both fabulously wealthy and hardly need an extra couple hundred grand.

This article sounds like a writer making excuses for Tiger and Phil both playing like crap, as if to say "they came for the appearance money only and didn't really try".

Word on the street is that appearance money can often equal or exceed 1st place money, especially overseas and in the Middle East.

I can't answer that Rex but I know whatever the Greenbrier paid them it wasn't enough coz neither one of them "showed up!"

Yes!!! Page one of a golf thread. It's about as close to immortality as I'll get.

True dat.

I have to admit, I'm a certified Tiger basher and watching him miss the cut was quite fun.

Captain Frontrunner just can't seem to come to grips with the fact that there are younger, stronger (non-steroid enhanced) guys who aren't afraid of him. His days of dominance are ovah!

Drick's been getting show-up money for years.

Whoever paid that 'show up' money to them should definitely ask for a refund.

And since we have a new thread that'll probably last till the Open:

In order of the score (the course will play to a par of 70):
MF GO picks Ian Poulter, score 270
Go Habs picks Eldrick Woods score 271
Slapshot picks Rory Mac, score 272
Bishop picks Paddy H., score 273
Harry Crack picks Luke Donald, score 274
Jakester picks Graeme McDowell score 275
Stranger picks Matt Kuchar, score 276
whale 2 picks Martin Kaymer score 277
Rex Racer picks Lee Westwood score 279
Mozart2010 picks Bubba Watson score 281

I thought Tiger and Phil made somewhere around $40M - $60M per year? It seems that a $500k or $1M appearance fee would be welcome by both players. That amount would be a significant contribution towards their annual incomes

I wish they wouldn't jam these new articles on here while we're still trying to cover every nuance of the old one. Next thing you know they'll be pushing this stuff in here every three weeks............whooooosh, and then another one. :-(

July 9, 2012  02:44 PM ET

Why should Woods and Mickelson not be paid to show up? When the other golfers reach their status, they will get paid to show up too. So what?

July 9, 2012  04:14 PM ET

what's the diff between gettin these two names to show up and getting non sports celebs to show up? It's good business, plain and simple. That is if they show up LOL

July 9, 2012  10:31 PM ET

I guess the appearance money was just enough for Phil and Tiger to show up, but just not enough to stick around West Virginia for 4 days.

July 10, 2012  05:55 AM ET

Two days in WVA is enough for anybody.
