[Welker and the Patriots have until 4 p.m.] to complete a contract extension or Welker has to play out the 2012 season under the franchise tag. ... Basically, the Patriots want Welker to take a bit of a discount to stay with Tom Brady. Welker, meanwhile, wants a deal that guarantees him just below the $21 million he would get paid playing two years under the franchise tag. You're talking about a distance in the range of around $6 million in guaranteed money. That's not to say the sides can't agree. The Patriots could very well give in a little bit at the end. Essentially what they will be asking themselves is this: What kind of year do we think Welker will have?

What kind of year do they think Welker will have? Are they serious? Welker is the most consitent and productive receiver in football. He came back early from an ACL injury and still had a good year. This is not someone you want to alienate from your team.

Considering that Welker is 100% a Brady/Bilichick creation, they can go find themselves another one for a third of the price who also hasn't won a super bowl but talks smack like he's a Jet.

When you talk about windows closing, you also have to talk about Brady. He's 34. Part of the Patriots' failure in the playoffs the last few years has been their inability to find anyone to replace Randy Moss as the fast outside guy. As replaceable as Randy Moss was, it turned out not be be so easy.
I'm thinking Brady has only a few more years at the top of his game. They have no running game, and no outside speed, either. To seize the day, they need more than a pair of great tight ends.

If the Pats are foolish enough to let Welker go, there will be plenty of other teams interested. The Pats may consider him expendable because of the emergence of their two tight end passing game, but they are taking a large gamble if they do. Whether Brady made Welker, or vice versa, the two work very well together.

You do realize that Welker was not on those Super Bowl teams, right? I know it is difficult to forget when he carries himself with an arrogance far exceeding his place, but its true.
I don't begrudge Patriot fans living off of superbowls eight years ago and older, but it kills me to see this guy strut and some of you folks putting him in the pantheon of greats when he has as many super bowl rings as we do.
Let him win something, and then we can discuss whether he "made" arguably the best QB of the past 20 years...and I'm a NY fan saying that.
