Eagles haunted by 'special' issue

08:03 AM ET 07.09 | The numbers are not kind to the Eagles, whose average of 20.9 yards per kickoff return ranked higher only than the Indianapolis Colts. Yet it was an improvement over the 20.5 average in each of the previous two seasons. ... For a team that boasts so many explosive athletes and exceptional wide-receiver depth, it was unacceptable and almost unexplainable. "We were bad there," special teams coordinator Bobby April understated during minicamp last month. "No question about it." April quickly tried to shift blame to himself, but that was just lip service. Fact is, he was only part of a larger problem that has characterized this team for almost the entire time Andy Reid has been head coach.

How about the special issue of not winning a championship since the days of Norm van Broklin?

So? Who cares if your kickoff coverage sucks? Roger Goofdell is going to eliminate kickoffs in a couple of years, anyway. Touchdown followed by 3 minutes of commercials. Then, the referee's announcment that the mandatory review validates the touchdown. 3 more minutes of commercials. Then, instead of the touchback, they'll put the ball on the 20, have 3 more minutes of commercials and then resume play.

The Eagles are "special" anyways. They have a BIG tendancy to choke.

I expect Reid's reign to be coming to a close here soon. Maybe he'll team back up with Holmgren in Cleveland soon.

I think that after the touchdown and review, they should take the geek method and each special teams coach should roll a 20-sided die to determine who gets the ball and yardage gained on the roll. If the coverage unit can roll a higher number then their chance increases of recovering a muffed catch or a fumble.

LOL. And the tv viewers could see the reverse angle replay of the roll in slow motion.

Dang, DD, I laughed pretty hard at that, but then I started thinking about how true it probably is. Then I cried in my coffee.

The Eagles build their team to show, not win. If they win great but its a business and they wont hurt their bottom line when the fans bleed green. They will always have excuses but when it comes down to it Reed isnt the problem, hes just the best tool for the job owners want done.

Goodell could turn the whole thing into a role playing game. Each of the linemen could match up and roll against each other as well. Then the refs could even roll to determine penalties. But then, we'd still have Goodell sitting in NYC rolling dice to see who he'd fine and for how much.

They have a problem with being "special." Andy Reid won't fit in the small school bus.

If that were true, John Harbaugh would have never been offered a head coaching job directly from Philadelphia's special teams coordinator position.

I think Philly may have done better to lose Andy a couple years back and promote Harbaugh. Maybe he could have elevated the Iggles' play.
