Why Detroit needs Avril more than ever

08:04 AM ET 07.09 | Cliff Avril, who has his own concerns on the contract front, was recently asked about his team's offseason turmoil. Turmoil isn't the word. More like mushroom cloud. Avril is intelligent, thoughtful and blunt. His words do not receive a mincing when speaking of the chaos on his own team. "We all do stupid things whether you're an NFL player or not," said Avril in an interview with CBSSports.com. ... Avril is critical to the franchise because he's one of the few stable elements in the isotope that are the Lions. This is a dangerous team, and not just off the field, but especially on it. There are more than a few people around football that believe the Lions have the offensive firepower to hang with the Green Bay Packers and the defensive potential to at least slow Aaron Rodgers.

They have talent but the coaching is crazy.

Don't forget about their deep experience with various state's legal systems. Enough to attract Cromartie.

So, if you don't do well in either Chemistry or English, you can still write for CBS Sports.

At this point, I believe they won't continue to grow unless a stable element replaces Schwartz. He's not the guy to carry them forward.

Schwartz isn't exactly the model to build a long term winning tradition. He's too emotional highs and lows.

A lot of the sports writers and sports shows have made it sound like all they have to do is show up this year and the wins will come. But if they get off to a 0-3 start we could be looking at the paper Lions instead.

Yeah, you're right. Schwartz has only taken an 0-16 team to the playoffs in three years. They should probably get rid of him. You people know absolutely nothing. Stick to tennis.

Easy, buttpirate. Just saying that any coach leading his team by chasing down other coaches over a handshake is not the choice for disciplinarian. He sets the tone and we've all seen what that tone is.

I think they make the playoffs as a wild card. They have a weak schedule, and who else in the NFC, other than the division winners, will have a better record.
One and done in the playoffs, maybe, I think they get there.

Just a long line of crappy coaches. Bring back Joe Schmidt.

The writer might have a point here. Rodgers will seem like a walk in the park after what Matt Flynn did to them last year.

Division Football is funny, it usually doesn't matter how good the team is in yout division, it's how are we going to beat these guys to a pulp, Redskins/Giants!!!

He has at that. Getting rid of Matt Millen (spelling) helped too.
