Rivers: 'He should have stayed'

08:07 AM ET 07.09 | That Celtics coach Doc Rivers was otherwise refreshed after a few weeks off couldn't hide his disappointment in losing Ray Allen. "I'm just disappointed, he should have stayed," Rivers said before the Celtics' summer league entry began practice at Rollins College. "We recruited him just as hard [as Miami]. We talked [after he agreed to a three-year contract with the Heat]. It was a good talk. When a guy makes his mind up, I am not going to try to change it. I respect him for all he did for us, but I thought he should have stayed with us." The Celtics offered twice as much money, but Allen relayed to Rivers the issues he had this past season, and that made the difference.

What do you expect from a guy who blasted David West for not going to Boston. Allen is terrible. Of course, Boston fans are going to blast Allen now, because those losers have no greater tradition than trashing guys who've won them championships.

jgb, I understand what you mean about him doing that to Pierce & KG. IMO, he owed the Celtics nothing, they gave him no loyalty, he chose to respond in kind...
But I recall reading some article about Ray's thought process - why would he always be the member of the Big Three that had to sacrifice the most - and I think that could have (amongst other things) influenced his decision to leave...

As a Heat fan, I have to say that this is awesome. Not because of 37 y/o Ray Allen, who I am happy to have on the Heat, but because he left the Celtics, and twice as much money, for the Heat.
If he had left and gone to the Clippers, it wouldn't be a "prick move". But he went to the Heat, and I know that it STINGS Celtics fans.
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. And they were never going to beat the heat ever again.
Sucks to be the Celtics. The Reign is over.

Behind those smiles sometimes lies a dirtbag. I respect his choice and right to free agency. I'm a big proponent of free agency. I dislike the dirtbags in the NFL with their criminal anti trust intrusioned "franchise tag". I just simply dislike his choice of Miami given his career was rejuvinated in Boston and won a title their. Like Bird, Parrish & McHale went the hall as Celtics, I would've love to see the same KG, Pierce & Allen.....now Allen ruined it with this move. Its not worth the stretch IMO.

Also, I should add, now that Allen is gone, the Celtics are 100% classless. Doc Rivers is the only person left in that organization who isn't a scumbag.

A Heat fan calling the Celts classless? You do know that Pat Riley and LeBron are part of the Heat organization, right?

It never sucks to be the Celtics. They are the Roman Empire of the NBA, as their 17 titles would attest.

LeBron made a bad move with "The Decision," but has been 100% class ever since. Meanwhile look at the history of Pierce & KG. Each has a long history of having absolutely no class. They're both punks, which is appropriate since Boston is the most obnoxious city in America. Ray Allen left because Danny Ainge kept trying to trade him and he didn't fit the rest of that locker room precisely because he is a class act. He'll fit in much better with Miami.

Allen felt unwanted in Boston(almost traded like twice) and couldn't stand playing with Rondo anymore. So he took his talents to a team that actually made him feel wanted.
