Time to wonder about Manuel's job security

08:13 AM ET 07.09 | Last week, Ruben Amaro Jr. said Charlie Manuel had done a "fantastic job" as Phillies manager and that he shouldn't have to answer questions about Manuel's job status. "We haven't played well," Amaro said. But with the Phillies taking a 37-50 record into the All-Star break, the heat is being turned up on everybody. So it was no surprise Manuel was asked Sunday at Citizens Bank Park if he is concerned he might take the fall for the team's fast fall. "How concerned am I? I've got a lot of confidence in myself," said Manuel, whose contract runs through next season. "And I am a fighter. And not only that, I think I'm a winner." Manuel then presented the places he has won as a player and manager, both in the big leagues, minor leagues and Japan.

He's the same manager that took a team to two world series so not sure how this team playing so badly can be all his fault? He'll be the scape goat anyway just because that's how it works.

It's been a good run Charlie, now I think it's time for a fresh leader of the Phils. After all, Ruben can't fire the players and someone's got to go.

Is Sandberg the clear heir apparent?

Maybe he'll hire Greg Maddux as his pitching coach....;)

<In best Henny Youngman voive> Take Fredi Gonzalez please!

July 9, 2012  10:23 AM ET

Ruben needs to be the one to go. He sunk a lot of money on the back end of the bullpen with no thought to how the team would get to the 9th with a lead. And where was Ruben when Beltran was looking for a team.

July 9, 2012  10:24 AM ET

Dubee will be the first to go, probably in August... Cholly will "retire" at the end of the season and become a "special assistant" to the GM... Sandberg will most likely end up in the big chair with Jamie Moyer as his pitching coach...

July 9, 2012  10:43 AM ET

The team quit on him. It's time for him to go

July 9, 2012  10:46 AM ET

He should be fine. The GM loaded him up with a team that has a lot of old guys, and a lot of them have been hurt. Roy Halladay missing time is the biggest one, but Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are huge too.

A shame but this is an old song which will be sung again and again until a new manager is named. You can't fire the team. Even Casey Stengel (rumor has it he was fairly decent) got fired!

July 9, 2012  12:27 PM ET

I was a Philly fan until the networks traded me to Seattle because it was 3000 miles closer; it's the same old story in Philly, though--if the team fails, blame the manager. I wish all of them the best, but don't think it will arrive this year.

July 9, 2012  12:33 PM ET

some of Charlies pitching decision's over the last few games have been appalling. But we need to face the facts, our team is 29.5 years old and getting older. Maybe it's time to start selling off some of the underachiving high priced players we have for some younger more hungry players in the league. What would it hurt... There not doing much with this group this year, and next year they will be 30.5 years old.

July 9, 2012  12:35 PM ET

Manuel also had an hour closed-door meeting with the team's top owner the other day. I'd say Reuben is the #1 problem with how he arranged the team. But Charlie also has really bungled several late-game decisions that, while not definitively costing a game, seriously reduced the chances of winning.

only in the Toilet of Philly will they keep someone like Marble Mouth manuel and Fat Andy Reid.....

July 9, 2012  01:37 PM ET

Don't think a new manager is going to do any better, But Terry is sitting on The Sidelines watching Baseball!

July 9, 2012  02:09 PM ET

On their way to losing 100 games this season!! After what they paid out..... this team is better than the Comedy Channel !!!!

That is it. Wash this season off the books, what with the injuries that they've had, and retool for '13 with Halladay and Lee.

Trade Hamels now, but talk to the guy, and let him know you'll try to bring him back over the winter. Get everything you can for him.

Trade Victorino. He has some value.

Trade Polanco, Mayberry, and some of the other parts. Get what you can.

Play Dominic Brown. See what he can do.

Next year, Howard will be back. Pence. Lee and Halladay. Papelbon. Maybe Utley will be a little healthier.

This team needs some fresh legs and arms.
