A Louisiana newspaper is reporting that the Orioles' top pick, LSU right-hander Kevin Gausman, is "seriously considering" going back to school, but the club says it is still in negotiations with the fourth overall selection of the 2012 draft. The Times-Picayune newspaper initially reported online Monday night that Gausman "will be" going back to LSU, while citing an unnamed source with "knowledge of the situation." The site later changed the wording to say the pitcher is "seriously considering" a return to campus. ... [When contacted by The Sun Monday], Orioles scouting director Gary Rajsich said he was not aware of the report or any declaration that Gausman would not be an Oriole. "We are talking and it is progressing," Rajsich said.

Baseball needs to change the draft rules. Once a player hires an agent, no going back to school, just like the other sports. If a player wants to be drafted, he needs to put his name in. How many teams waste a pick, even with the high school kids, and never get to sign him b ecause they go back to school if they don't get enough money? Bunch of crap. Salary cap for the draftees as well, which is what they are kinda doing now, is a good thing. Too much wasted koney on these unknowns.

I'm not sure it is about money--he is unlikely to be drafted higher than fourth next year. It is more likely about the organization, or at least how the kid perceives the organization.

Regardless of what the Orioles' record has been over the last decade plus, this is still an opportunity to play professional baseball. If he is willing to forgo $4 million plus to go back and try to win a college world series with his team, then go, however, 5-10 years from now will anyone be able to remember who was in the college world series or really care who won it? Either the kid or his agent, if they pass up this opportunity, would be acting foolishly. Also, he needs to consider that 1) he may not have the same type of record next year and 2) what if he gets injured will he make this same type of money...TAKE the money NOW!
