08:07 AM ET 07.11 | At its high point, the marriage between Drew Brees and the Saints resulted in a Super Bowl, and now things appear to be headed in an unfortunate direction. If [Brees] does not have a long-term contract in place by Monday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, the New Orleans Saints quarterback has no plans to sign his franchise tender and report to training camp, according to league and team sources. Brees and the Saints must work out a long-term contract by July 16 or he will be required to play the 2012 season under his $16.371-million exclusive-rights franchise tender that restricts the free agent from signing with another team. However, sources say Brees has made it clear to confidants that he will not sign the tender and report to Saints training camp when it begins July 24.

I understand Brees' position. He was snubbed by the Chargers. He was snubbed by the Dolphins. The Saints took a chance on him, and he delivered both on and off the field. The Saints could not have asked for a better team or community leader. Brees has earned a long-term contract through his work, and he deserves it.

The only reason that I place any legitimacy in this story is that it was from Chris Mortensen, one of the few NFL reporters that I consider trustworthy at ESPN. If it were reported by the muckraker Adam Schefter, then it would mean nothing.

And so begins the era of Chase Daniels, and the return of the Ain'ts and fans with bags over their heads.
Hmmmmm....if the whole coaching staff adopted the bags-on-their-heads attire, Sean Payton could work completely incognito.
What's the official Brown Paper Bag of the NFL, anyway?

maybe the NFL should come out with a line of those cloth bags you get at various stores to re-use instead of plastic or paper. Each team could have one to be used so fans could hide from what happens on the field.

Another great idea to find on NFLShop.com. Paper bags with your team's logo.
High-grade recycled paper with your team's logo emblazoned across both sides and the name Anonymous across the back. These bags are not reusable and you can purchase either the Home Game Package that includes 8 bags or the Season Package if you choose to travel and represent anonymously as a visitor. Act now and we'll cut shipping costs in half.

Wow, great idea. The NFL experience without the embarrasment of coming out of the team closet. And Green, too.
I still want ten percent. Twenty percent on new logos like the LA Conquistadors.

Revenue lost if Brees holds out is FAR more than the impact of the salary that Brees is demanding....owner will cave because it's all about the money...

The Saints have already offered enough $$$ to make him the highest paid player in NFL history. It isn't about the money anymore, it's about how much he gets stacked in the first couple of years of the contract. He doesn't want it spread out evenly by any means. He knows better than anyone that every NFL player is only one hit away from retirement.

I see a disaster in the making. The spammers will sell cheap, plastic knock-off bags, the fans who buy them will suffocate, the seats in the Superdome will be empty, and the team will black-out tv coverage.

That's even more reason why you'd think the Saints would want to get this done. They need some positive PR in the worst way.
