Players' take on Goodell? Apathy

08:03 AM ET 07.12 | In his relatively short tenure, Roger Goodell has become a polarizing figure among NFL players. Players like [Goodell] and they hate him. They respect him and they don't. Emotions about Goodell run strong but they also include, perhaps surprisingly, a sizeable helping of indifference. Surprising because over the past year the NFL and its players have been engaged in some of the most bitter fighting the league has ever seen -- from the lockout to Bountygate. In some instances, particularly in the case of the Saints, the players were hammered by Goodell. One would expect the players to despise Goodell (and some do) but the overriding feeling expressed by players in interviews was not anger or bitterness but apathy.

Does the name David Stern ring a bell ???

This^^^^

Players are realizing there is little they can do and have realized that they all report (in one sense or another) to the tyrant. Just keeping quiet when that topic is brought up is just a survival mechanism.

I'm not sure any football fans like him. I suppose baseball fans would be apathetic about him, though.

Most players aren't doing the type of stupid crap it takes to get a personal audience with the commish.

Moving the kickoff line up to get more touchbacks makes me hate this clown, more than anything else.

There ya go. The kickoff is now as exciting as watching a tiddlywinks tournament.

I'll second that

Apathy? I have no opinion either way.

Right. Who cares about apathy, anyway?

I would really like to see teams work on coffin-corner kickoffs, like they do with punts. Have you watched where the punts have been coming down the last couple of years? So many punters can put the ball up high and have it come down on the 10. With the kickoff line moved up, the kickers could take a bit off the ball and try to do better than the automatic touchback. The trick is to get more height on the kickoff so the gunners can get down in coverage.

I think the writers are mistaking quit contempt for apathy.

He moved it so returners didn't get murdered.

Nevertheless, a runback is exciting and part of the game of football. A touchback is just boring.

With the mandatory review of touchdowns and all the commercial breaks (after the score, after the extra point, after the kickoff) we now have about 10 minutes of dead time after every TD. Taking out the only exciting part, the runback, really sucks.
