Nats will have to 'rip the ball' from Strasburg

08:15 AM ET 07.12 | Just last week, a column out of Washington commended the Nationals for taking a conservative approach with Stephen Strasburg's innings count. Well, the past few days have added a few names to the "nincompoop side," starting with one Stephen Strasburg. The All-Star pitcher was on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio on Tuesday, and Jim Bowden tried a novel approach to the shutdown question. "Stephen, a lot's been made about the inning limit, and I'm sure you've been asked it 50 million times, so I'm not gonna go there," Bowden began. "But just make sure I know: You're gonna be pitching Game 1 of the World Series if the Nationals get there, aren't you?" "Well, they're gonna have to rip the ball out of my hands, that's all I can say," Strasburg answered.

Why not cut his starts back to five innings? Or, skip a few starts. Hell, call up Lannan and go with a six-man rotation.

Agreed. What's the point of having a star pitcher help your team get to the playoffs if he can't help you when you get there? Assuming he would pitch in the playoffs, how effective will he be after a multi-week layoff?

They restricted this kid before and it didn't help.
When you have a chance to win, you gotta go for it. You never know what is going to happen in the future. You can't count on getting a bunch of chances. DC hasn't won a WS since the 30's.
Life is short and those fans deserve a full effort from everyone.

The Nats have a deep pitching rotation. Start resting him now. If they still have any minor league options on him, then send him down, call someone up, and sit him for a month. Then bring him back slowly and have him ready for the stretch drive and playoffs.

Right there with you. Use 'em if you got 'em, because you never know what the future holds. And if a guy helps get you to the playoffs, logic would suggest that they will be necessary to advance in the playoffs.

Normally I would agree with the sentiment to go for the playoffs when you have the chance. Because you don't know when you will have that chance again. But with a great, young pitching prospect, that is foolish. This guy could well have a dominant 10+ year career. He is an incredibly valuable asset. Any business that takes an asset worth $100M-$200M and burns it for a short term $10M payoff is stupid.

Let's say they sit Strasburg down for 6 starts. The Nats might expect to win 4 of those. There's a good chance they win 3 anyway, and there's a high probability of winning at least 2. So they lose 1 or 2 games. Odds are that won't cost them a playoff berth, and it might not cost them anything at all. Then they have him back for the playoffs and a run at the Series. This doesn't seem like a high price to pay vs burning out his arm.

I understand the concern, especially with Strasburg. Look at Carpenter last year, and the toll it took on his arm.
But...there are smart ways to limit the kid's innings while still allowing him to be ready for the playoffs.

Possibly. Or he could tear his rotator cuff and never pitch again, or at least not be the same pitcher he was. Not an easy call for an organization to make, however they decide to go.

I would be more concerned with the cumulative number of pitches rather than innings. I would also have started his pre-season a month after the actual pre-season. Thus, his first game would have been in May as opposed to April -- and then he would be primed for the post season.
