Red Sox looking for takers

08:16 AM ET 07.12 | As Carl Crawford readies for a minor league rehab redux, the Boston outfield is showing signs of overcrowding. As Crawford returns to the field in the minors, the Red Sox are expected to activate center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury for Friday's game at Tampa Bay. Ellsbury, who has been on the DL since April 14 with a partial dislocation of his right (non-throwing) shoulder, played in eight minor league games and was 5 for 27 (.185). He did not attempt any stolen bases. Ellsbury played in seven games before he was injured. With Ellsbury coming back and Crawford going in that direction, the Red Sox are gauging trade interest in their other outfielders, specifically Ryan Sweeney. Sweeney is hitting .283 but has not hit a home run in 180 at-bats.

The Sox are stuck with Crawford and his big contract, so their only choice is to release him and buy him out or start getting rid of players they really want to keep.

No one will trade for that contract. Not to mention, on the MLB channel this morning, they said Crawford may need Tommy John surgery. They didn't give details, but it sounds like his elbow isn't getting better.

He does need Tommy John surgery. He has even said it's just a matter of time before his elbow blows out.

I think I'd be leery about trading outfielders, given the likelihood of Crawford getting re-injured. There is too much smoke in the discussion of his elbow for there not to be some fire there.

I believe they want to wait until at least September before deciding on the surgery. Tommy John is not nearly as bad for a position player as it is for a pitcher. 6-7 months, and they are ready to go.

I hadn't heard that it was a certain thing. It's not like he can DH for them, what with Ortiz on the team. What's he going to do? Just play until it gives out? If it's that bad, I'm thinking he should have had the surgery months ago. That way he's back next year. This way, he's missed half the season, and will probably miss a chunk of next season.

I don't know about that. Xavier Nady had Tommy John about 2 years ago and he was out for nearly a year.

Rocco Baldeli was taking about it the other day in the papers, he had the same procedure done in July, while rehabbing from a different injury and he said he was ready to go by spring training the following season. Even Dick K was throwing from a mound pain free in January after July surgery. But throwing 100 pitches a game is a little different than an OF, who may need to make 5 or throws during a game.

Of course, that only helps if you have the second-best record among non-division winners. The Red Sox would have to leapfrog a few teams to get there. More importantly, they'd have to show they can play better ball first.
