Pence on the block?

08:17 AM ET 07.12 | Soon, the Phillies' clubhouse could look a whole lot different than it does today. Just as complicated [as the Cole Hamels situation], and perhaps more pertinent in the coming weeks, is Ruben Amaro Jr.'s outfield plight. The general manager's decisions could have wide-ranging effects on not only 2012, but well beyond. Shane Victorino is a free agent. Hunter Pence has one year of arbitration remaining. Left field is manned by Juan Pierre, who signed a minor-league contract, and John Mayberry Jr. ... [When Houston dealt Pence] to Philadelphia, the Astros received three quality prospects in return. His value would not be as high with one less year of control, but he might have the most of any Phillies trade chip -- even Hamels.

A Very Good Player!!!

I can see trading Hamels- I'm very convinced the Phillies have no upper hand on signing him, regardless of where he finishes the season.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, shop Victorino- he contributes nothing to this team anymore except mediocre defense, horribly ugly swings at bad pitches, and pop/fly outs.

But if the organization truely believes this is just a rough year for a still very good team, Pence needs to stay. He's having troubles this year, but he's stil young, and decent, and VERY outspoken about how much he loves playing in Philly.

If a team is looking for a hustler like Rose, and a good clubhouse man, and a player under contract Pence is your man.

Player Likelihood of being dealt
Hamels 60%
Victorino 50%
Pence .0001%

There are pictures of Pence widely available.

Trading Pence would be a huge mistake for a team that needs offense...

July 12, 2012  11:09 AM ET

At this point, the Phillies should be looking at all options. They have gotten old in a hurry, their top guys are injury prone, and they have a lot of salary - the highest payroll in the NL - for a last-place team.

Blow it up. Rollins is old and not what he used to be. Utley seems about done. Howard has a huge deal, and has been hurt. Victorino has not been himself. Polanco is a utility guy. Brown washed out. Mayberry is a backup. The bullpen sucks. Lee has been off. Hamels is a free agent to be.

Keep Halladay and Howard. Deal everyone else that will bring a good return.

.....biggest mistake for phjillies is to think this year is a fluke and all will be fine next spring training......should get rid of every player over 25, stock up, and start over....

Now you guys know what the Mets have been going through for the last few years. Get rid of all of the high-priced players, and work on player development in the minors. The Mets are successful this year because of their minor league system. Plain and simple.

I disagree 100% with that.

From the outside, looking at his stats, Pence looks like a good ball player. He hits for avg. .300, some power 25 HRs, and 100RBIs with a solid OBP and OPS.

HOWEVER, it is very deceptive. I call it the Bobby Abreu effect. Player looks good on paper but doesn't translate into wins on the field. Pence's defense is atrocious in RF. I'm not talking about his range, I'm talking about reading fly balls and catching them on the run. He is also very goofy on the base path and is abysmal at hitting with runners on base.

Philly fans should gladly look to trade him, he is quite over rated.

hammels for crawford and beckett...done and done

I wouldn't mind getting Polanco back on the Tigers.

How about Hammels for Rickie Weeks?

Baseball, especially now that the steroid era is over, is a young man's game. The Phillies are old. Their lineup lacks speed, and needs an overhaul.

Trade Victorino. He is gone anyways. Trade Pence to a contender that needs a right-handed bat...Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore, among others, make sense. Talk to Hamels about an extension. Trade him to LA or wherever for a bucket of young guys. Trade Polanco. Hell, trade Lee if you can get a lot for him.

Check the numbers for the Phils since their World Series victory. The offense is declining. Even last year, they were about average. They need a reboot with youth involved.
