08:22 AM ET 07.12 | Thanks to the NCAA granting his waiver request on Wednesday, Alabama transfer Phillip Sims will be allowed to play quarterback at Virginia this fall. The Chesapeake, Va., native will likely be given a chance to challenge for the starting job under center when the Cavaliers open training camp next month. ... NCAA rules usually call for transfers to sit out one season, but they allow for exceptions if a player is going to a new school because of a family emergency or illness. There was some debate over whether Sims's request would be granted after his high school coach, Rich Morgan, told the Virginian Pilot that Sims would not have transferred had he been the starter at Alabama.

Sims was once considered a top QB recruit (according to Rivals). What happened?

So not being a starter is an emergency then?

Hell, if that's the case, then I've been in an emergency since I got beat out for QB in the 10th grade.

I was looking forward to seeing him play ... not necessarily at Virginia.

I was hoping he would stay. Because I'm not racist. :) (Yes, some people have accused us for that being the reason, too).

So, if McCarron goes down, who is his backup?
And the "racist" accusations are really unfortunate.

Philip Ely is the presumptive backup at this point, but I imagine that Alec Morris (A TX kid) will be his backup fairly quickly.

Unfortunately, you are correct. It seems that those of us from Alabama (and other Southern states) are subjected to that accusation quite a bit. As if racism only exists in the South and you and I are responsible for its existence.

It is a hard lesson some of these high school kids are learning that they are the man in high school but when they go to the next level sometimes there is somebody already there is a whole lot better than you are.
