08:00 AM ET 07.13 | Browns general manager Tom Heckert said earlier in the day that the Browns were planning on using a second-round pick on former Baylor receiver Josh Gordon "no matter what" and that "he has the makings" of a No. 1 receiver. The Browns selected Gordon in the second round of the NFL's Supplemental Draft [Thursday] afternoon. He was the only player selected in the draft. They were lucky enough to land the No. 2 spot in the supplemental draft order, picking only behind the Bills. ... On if Gordon can be a No. 1: "He can be. He can start in the NFL, that's obviously what we think." * On if Gordon can start right away. "We'll have to see. He's a guy that can come in an be an eventual starter for us."

Browns management doesn't always make the best moves.

Nope. And is it worth losing next year's 2nd round pick? I doubt it.

How often does anyone picked in the supplemental draft have much of a career? The answer is NO!

I think NFL Network or ESPN (can't remember which I was listening to) said they thought he could be starting in 2-3 years. A 2nd round pick in next year's regular draft will be starting sooner.

Maybe they think that with Weeden, they can train together and bolster a dismal WR core. A decent QB will help Gordon be as good as possible. Hope they both do well, the Browns could use it. I like Weeden, I'm anxious to see how he does in the next couple of years.

If they really needed to add a WR wouldn't it have been better to wait when training camp cuts start rather than wasting next years 2nd round pick?

Completely agree. Additionally, for some of these kids to make themselves eligible for the supplemental draft rather than waiting for a potential high-level regular draft projection are missing out on better contract opportunities as well.
I think the supplemental is another marketing fiasco by the NFL that doesn't make sense to continue and it's generally a poor business decision on the part of GMs. He'd probably have had a better opportunity as an undrafted FA.

He was suspended from Baylor in 2010 for a failed drug test and didn't play in 2011.

Most of these supplemental draft guys were off the their teams for academic reasons. Given the low expectations for big-time college athletes, to flunk out of those cream-puff courses should tell you something.

For example, it tells me they're too short for the NBA.

I heard that RG3 was trying to get the Redskins to get this guy

This is a good gamble. If the guy pans out, the Browns get an extra season out of him.
However, only about half of receivers drafted in the first couple of rounds pan out.
...the best policy

Even rookie minimum is serious money to give a guy with known drug issues.
